What is Upstate NY?

I grew up in WNY, my dad’s family was from Herkimer County. No one from either of those places referred to it as “up state”. It’s an outsider term for anything other than NYC…we always chuckle when people use it because it’s so meaningless.

Hard disagree. Mostly grew up in CNY and went to school in WNY.

I lived in upstate. In CNY and WNY, which upstate includes. Practically everyone I knew from NY, whether CNY, WNY, north counties, southern tier, Long Island, the city, etc used upstate for anything north of Westchester.

North of the Catskills, and including the Catskills from my 35 or so years upstate.

But where I’m from , in the southern ADK, we are considered part of, maybe the beginning of, the “North Country .”
