What TV shows are you watching 2024/25?

Thanks! I’ll look for it when I get home.

First few episodes good. Not what I expected.

Great Good story line. Mostly just good gangster stuff so far.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is halfway through its fifth and final (sob!) season. Unfortunately I believe it’s not available in Taiwan through regular means.

But damn that show is my happy place. Delightful. However, probably not a show to watch if you have zero familiarity with Star Trek.

I’ve heard mostly quite positive reviews of The Penguin: basically a mix of Sopranos and comic book gangster stories.

Haven’t watched it, but my to-watch list is a mile long. Oh, and that reminds me, I need to get through the rest of What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 before Disney+ decides to stop letting me piggyback on my sister-in-law’s account. Or is it Season 4 we’ve got here, with Season 5 currently airing but unavailable here?

Also to watch on Disney+ is “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen”, the MASH finale, which I’ve never seen. I’m sort of mixed in that I loved big stretches of that show but, well, the finale came after a perhaps equally big stretch that I didn’t love anywhere near as much.

I like this show a lot but it seems to get a bit monotonous like quickly begin to know what to expect

True - but when what I’m expecting is any line from Matt Berry, well, I’m still going to be happy! I do think setting up Guillermo to have some kind of story, and then never really knowing what to do with it, is a weakness of the show.

Matt Berry’s voice’s appearance in Fallout was one highlight amongst many in that show. That wasn’t necessarily my favorite show of the year, but the … newest? Most unexpected? thing I’ve watched this year.

I’m really enjoying the Penguin. Probably up there with the best TV shows of the year. Colin Farrell is great, as is Sofia Falcone actress (ep 4 is really good). And, Farrell channeled his inner Tony Soprano to great effect.

Good season. Brutal ending.

Hey fellow geek!

Love the show. My favorite episode is the live action one. I’ve watched it probably six times! You know, with Strange New Worlds!

plus 1 for Penguin.

Colin Farrell absolutely nails the character’s utter ruthlessness.

The way he tosses the ID card into the river at the end, such an absolute fuck you to Victor, coupled with the look on his face after he strangled him…

The only thing the finale didn’t need was the Bat Signal. The series works as a gangster joint on its own.

Second time this year Colin Farrell has been a fan favourite round our house - adored Sugar as well. Such a strong performance - love love love me some noir - and the care that went into the filming and shot selection and editing and cinematography and crafting of each scene (I lack the knowledge to accurately describe what I mean other than to bang my fists on the table and shriek “Picture look so pretty make Betty brain tingle!”) from the colouring to the film grain to the angles to the speed of the cuts… chef’s kiss.

Thanks. Never heard of it.

I think I’ve only seen the (fantastic!) live action crossover episode once, but I’ll rewatch Season 2 of Strange New Worlds just before Season 3 comes out.

I’m so happy Strange New Worlds returns to the old Star Trek pattern of jumping genre from week to week. “Yeah, forget that horror episode from last week. This week, we’re going rom-com!” I assume there are other shows out there that do that (Doctor Who, kind of, but there hasn’t been much good writing on that show in quite a while now), but I can’t think of any that I regularly watch.

Lower Decks rewatches, however, are in regular rotation for me when I’ve got thirty minutes to kill and I’m not in the mood to read anything and I remember I shouldn’t spend so much time online.

Another Friday special at the Apple TV store.

The Wire, The Complete Series - all 5 seasons - for US$19.99.

Damn it, not currently that price in the Canada Apple TV store. But I’ll keep an eye on it over the next couple of days.

And god Apple, the old iTunes store was so much easier to navigate than the new aberration in the TV app.

I liked the old TVShows/itunes app, the one they abandoned, a lot more. It had a thumbnail synopsis, cast member names and actors playing them, and other useful bits of information like languages, production details, Rotten Tomato scores, etc.

It’s not often Apple makes poor customer-facing decisions, but this is one. Feels a little like cows being herded back to the barn, this move to one app.

Finished binging ‘Succession.’ Took me about a
month (with kids, the days of weekend binges are long over).

Great show, great performances… in terms of prestige TV, I’d only rank it below ‘Sopranos’, ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘The Wire’ (still haven’t watched ‘Better Call Saul’, but I hear that’s another one in the conversation for best ever). I probably won’t ever watch it again because some episodes were super dark, but would definitely recommend it. 10/10.

Wow. I like some of the cast, but the premise just looked too boring to give it a go. You give high praise. If i get back on the streaming bandwagon (bandwidth?) I’ll have to remember to g8ve it a go

If you liked Breaking Bad, gotta watch Better Call Saul

Yeah, it’s been on my watch list for years.

‘Succession’ is great, but some episodes are brutal. Not sure what I’d compare it to. It’s like Hamlet and Macbeth mixed with a bit of ‘Mad Men.’ It does take a few episodes to get into, but picks up around the sixth episode and from there gets better and better (and darker and darker).

Anyone watching Dune: Prophecy?

IMHO

Summary

Same story, same characters, different actors.

Feels like the “new” Mean Girls.
