What's a good, cheap 2 stroke scooter to mod?

Hey guys. I want to get a scoot that I can (in the future) do some performance modifications to. I don’t want to spend a lot of money, and I see that most of the threads about modding scooters here are about the newer 4 stroke models, which are way out of my price range. I’ve been looking on ruten and other local auction sites and see that quite a few older (but not ancient) 2 stroke scoots are going for prices well under 15000, which is perfect for me. Being a big fan of 2 stroke bikes (previously have owned an RZR and NSR in Taiwan, and in SA a TZR250), I’d like to get a 2 stroke scoot and slap on a performance pipe, throw on some sticky tyres and upgrade the brakes and suspension (all in good time) without spending too much money.

Any recommendations for cheap, mod-able 2 stroke scoots?

PGO Hot90.

expansion pipe, big carb, roller weights, port mods, big piston, bored.

extra 3-4 HP no problem!

problem is finding a pipe.

The most popular 2 stroke scooters that people mod out here are either the honda/SYM Dio 50cc which is probably the most popular and has the most aftermarket parts, then there is the Yamaha Jog 50cc and the Yamaha Glide 50cc. I see more Yamaha Glide 100cc 2-strokes than the 50cc’s. Sometimes out at the go cart tracks I see a lot of Yamaha 100cc Glides that are track worthy.

My friend and I both have 50cc Yamaha Cabins that we bought stock years ago and have slowly modded them out a bit. I have actually owned mine for 7 years, bought it for 3000nt back then. It originally had front drum brakes, but I went to the local junk yard and found 90cc Cabin with disk brakes and bought the entire conversion. It was actually a pain in the ass to swap that, but I did it with some help. I also but an aftermarket pipe on it, and years ago changed the piston and cylinder to a 90cc. Once I did that, I changed the rollers, clutch and clutch spring and that little 50cc (90cc) would haul ass. It was such a sleeper. It was awesome. It lasted 6 months until I seized the piston. I bought a new one and 6 months later I seized it again, so I just put it back to stock. It is still pretty peppy for a 50cc because of the pipe and transmission mods. It stops on a dime with the disk brakes. I also changed out the front and rear suspension to make it stiffer and of course the I changed the tires out… I love that thing, and I am still using the original crankshaft from 7 years ago. It is amazing. It is my daily rider and I ride the shit out of it. It has been the most reliable machine I have ever bought in my life.

My friend who has the same Cabin scoot already came stock with disk brakes, so he also did the 90cc conversion, then put a huge carb on it with a really aggressive expansion chamber pipe on it. It is so fucking loud and takes about 20 min to warm up, but once it is warm it is pretty fast. He never rides it though and is a pain in the ass because it is so loud. It is just wasting away! He might be interested in selling it! It has been sitting outside though and has some rust now :frowning:

Every 2 months they have scooter drags out at the Longtan race track and nowadays the 4-strokes are beating the 2 strokes. But there are some really impressive 2-stroke scooters out there that are insanely fast. If you really want to build a little 50cc scoot than I recommend buying a SYM Dio. They are the best for the job and you can find them used for really cheap!

Once of these days I’m going to build a 2-stroke dragster…one of these days!

Drag Jog…build something like this! :notworthy: There are tons of dragsters like this out at the scooter drags!

Awesome advice rk1951, thanks! Your friend’s scooter sounds like too much for me though, 20 mins to warm up… This scoot is gonna be my daily driver so I don’t want it to be too excessive with the mods. Just something that I can turn into a nice-handling, sharp-stopping machine that puts a grin on my face when I crack open the throttle.
