The Formosan Association for Public Affairs said yesterday that its protests have made the U.S. State Department allow Taiwanese to write Taiwan as their country of origin or birthplace on official application forms.
Officials used to demand that Taiwanese fill out the names “People’s Republic of China” or “Taiwan, China” on forms to apply for U.S. citizenship, the Washington, D.C.-based group said in a statement.

Ma’s use of “R.O.C. Taiwan Area” belittles sovereignty, says Lai

Lai Ching-te (賴清德), the secretary general of the DPP legislators demanded that President Ma Ying-jeou issue an apology for using the name Republic of China, Taiwan Area during a meeting with Dr. Brian Mishara, the chairman of the International Suicide Prevention Association.
The name seriously compromised Taiwan’s sovereignty, said Lai.
But the ruling KMT reacted by saying that Ma’s statement was correct and therefore there was no need for an apology.
Lai also said that President Ma’s statement showed that he was not qualified to be president.
Sigh

For an organisation that places such importance on names the Formosan Association for Public Affairs certainly picked one with an unfortunate acronym.

tommy525:
you think too much
Hey, maybe you could help out the pro Taiwan lobby in the US. They don’t seem to be doing a very good job compared to the pro Israel lobby. Come to think of it the US seemed quite willing to face off against Russia to defend Georgia, even though the Georgians started the war. Actually Kosovo has a better lobbying organisation.
Well that would require a lot of Americans of Taiwanese descent to get elected into public office like Jewish Americans.
And given the fact many Taiwanese American don’t have European features it is very difficult for them to get elected into office.
