What’s your favorite Sex Pistols song?
- Anarchy in the U.K.
- God Save the Queen
- Holidays in the Sun
- Pretty Vacant
- Bodies
Let’s get real, there are only about 4 or 5 great ones to choose from. Their ouvre is a bit slimmer than Tom Waits’ songbook.
‘Or juuuust anooother country?’
All of them is the only answer. After the New York Dolls and the Damned, with a touch of Patti Smith, there WERE only the Pistols. And still are. Unless you count johnny-come-latelys such as Henry R, the Buzzcocks and that bloke in that band what did The Correct Use of Soap that I’ve forgotten the name of.
Why can’t they act nice. Like nice boys should.
“Pretty Vacant.” And the fucked-up cover of “Road Runner.”
A friend of mine had tickets to one of their shows. But there was a snowstorm the day of the show, so he thought it would be too much trouble to go and decided he’d just catch them on their next tour.
Turns out that was the last show they ever played.

There was a snowstorm in San Francisco?!
Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?
Make that the second-to-last show.
It’s a bit odd, but the two best rock’n’roll movies I’ve ever seen were about them: Sid and Nancy (a fictionalized account) and The Filth and the Fury (a straight documentary). The documentary in particular was surprisingly moving - to see a grown man in his (40s? 50s?) John Lydon reduced to weeping in tears on camera over losing his best friend to heroin when they were teenagers, well, it almost drove me to tears myself.
Steve Jones, however, came across as a classic sex-addict pervert. I bet they named the band after him.
I mean, the Clash documentary I saw was pretty boring in comparison, even though I enjoy their music quite a bit better. I’ve certainly listened to London Calling far more than Never Mind the Bollocks. But the Pistols were much more interesting as a story than the Clash (or the Buzzcocks, or Wire, or the Ramones, etc…)
I like Holiday in Cambodia…oh, wait a minute…
The Saints.
Everything after them is just an imitation.
“Bodies” because it was the first time I’d ever heard the word “fuck” on vinyl. My jr. high friends and I soon became punks in a town that soon became famous for west coast punk. We wore the grooves out on “Never Mind The Bullocks”
We also loved Devo, Led ZEP, the Undertones, the Weirdos, Da Ramones, B-52s, the Jam, Clash, Gen X, X-Ray specs, etc. before the hardcore explosion on the west coast came.
But the Pistols always held a place in my heart. I know they didn’t have much musical talent but they gave talentless teenage doofs inspiration to play. And we created our own non-Brit , non-east coast style. All DIY and alot of fun making your own clothes and music instead of buying it.
And let’s not forget these guys The Dictators!

After the first few years the skin heads and der Fuher Tom Metzger took over So.Cal. hardcore and it all went to Grunge.
Which was just the North Pacific reaction for wanna-be hippies and drug addicts to go to concerts meet girls and not get their head kicked in by skins, gangs and cops.
Very limited polling options.
The band was of course far different live than in the usual studio array.
That said:
Best Track:
“My Way”
Taking on Frank.
This ain’t no light matter…
No. 2 goes to “Friggin in the Riggin”.
Their live performance of (I Ain’t Your) Stepping Stone was pretty fucking wicked, but there aren’t many decent recordings available.
I would also strongly recommend a number a couple of them did with Phil Lynott. Can’t for the life of me remember the name of the song, but it was a very jolly Christmas song. Something along the lines of ‘Jingle bells, jingle jangle, jingle all the way.’ Happy, upbeat, and no swearing.

Here it is. What’s not to like?
