I’ve been part of many expat groups in different countries. This is the only one that regularly and openly criticizes the country it’s in and doesn’t become a “go home if you hate it” every comment thing
For example in the Italian group I’m in, if I say I did not enjoy how little Italy innovates on new foods even if it’s a hit or miss sometimes with new foods ideas. They would all gang up on me and tell me to go back to where I came from.
People don’t say that kind of thing here. For most expat groups, any criticism of that country is like attacking them or something.
Yeah, I don’t hear of any young adults talking about going abroad at all, they all seem to talk about buying houses and never doing anything social, other than being permanently glued to their phone.
Well in my defense or maybe not a TW girl I was teaching how to drive failed the Calif license Road test four times . Once for going to fast ,once for going too slow , once for following traffic too closely and finally for following the car ahead for no apparent reason. !!!
she is back in Taiwan and Nope no license
Tammy passed because I hired a local professional driving school
They bring their own cars and trainers for hour by hour training
I joke that she scared them all as she never had the same trainer twice !!
Yeah, this website feels more old school, more human, than the cults elsewhere where it’s like you’re only allowed to be positive about something you have an interest in, or fuck off and die.
Should look at some of the coding/programming communities, Github even, if you don’t get on your knees in front of “Uncle Bob” (yes they call someone that) then you’re fucking trash, despite way overachieving them.
I’m sure you’ve read about how few young people - at least in the west - are having sex these days compared to previous generations. They’d all rather be on their phones and can’t be bothered to go out or do anything that requires social effort. Not a leap to speculate that this antisocial behavior would extend to other areas, such as working overseas.
Anyone remember that guy from 7 or 8 years ago… maybe even longer… who would make a post every time a 7/11 clerk smiled at him? He would gush about it and ask us if she might be interested in dating him. Every few days he’d make a new thread reporting on some other girl he’d brushed shoulders with. He might’ve been on the spectrum, but I really miss the goofy threads from greenhorns like him. I can’t even remember the last time I saw an earnest thread from a newcomer here.
Tbh I’ve thought about quietly just leaving the last year or so. Not one of those big announcements.
Sometimes I waste too much time on here about unimportant stuff and my life has become increasingly busy.
It might also sound silly but Micks passing even though I never met him in person hit me hard. I really liked that guy and his POV. He was trip a unique guy who was clearly intelligent but not egocentric about it and kept his cool when things got heated. We’ve talked a lot on here. Kind of made me not really want to stay in some way.
There was @shiadoa too who was a character and gentleman.
I drift in and out. It doesn’t take up too much of my time except in those rare cases I get very involved in a thread. Most of the time I’m posting in the ‘Funny Pics’ thread.
I don’t know much about what is actually happening on Forumosa…including the average age of members (my guess 45?) But perhaps is simply younger crowd is spending more time commenting on apps like Threads. My wife uses that quite often for specific issues…sort of a opinion gathering type place…or semi-problem solving. Never used it so don’t know. But between Threads, FB, and Line she is busy enough. I could not stand having so many messages coming at me everyday…I even have asked her how she sorts through all the noise with hundreds of contacts on those apps. Heck, I tried to avoid most of the friend requests I got on Facebook so my contact list is short. And Line groups (as well as Whatsapp, WeChat) are very few and only per requests from a few friends…helps that I do not even know how to create a Line group and really don’t plan to learn. Hmmm…perhaps some anti-social tendencies???
The fact Threads was created by an American company for an American audience and is only popular with non-Americans is ironic and highly amusing to me.
