Message boards like these have long been on their way out. Social media has been replacing forums like this for over a decade. Have you noticed 90% of the posters on here are middle-aged or older? Meh, it is what it is. Guess that’s “progress.” The thing I miss the most is the young fresh-off-the-boaters that would post buxiban horror stories. Those used to be common (and highly entertaining to read) and now they’re as rare as a YouBike without trash in its basket.
I’d add that there’s a double punch… message boards like this are in decline, but I feel like so is EFL teaching in East Asia. Seems less westerners coming here to teach especially since COVID. Most of the expats I see on the street are in their 30s or older. They used to skew much younger.
Yep, me too. Don’t know how to explain it. I guess there’s the argument that East Asia is tapped out when it comes to easy EFL jobs for newcomers, but I feel like there’s more to it than just that. I think this younger generation are just less adventurous and would rather be homebodies still living with their parents into their 20s instead of venturing out to see the world. “Otaku” culture may have started in Japan, but it’s become a worldwide phenomenon. Just my own dumb theory.
Meh. Social media is just as toxic, maybe more so. Check the comment thread on any mildly controversial news item. At least here, they make an effort to moderate any racist, antisemitic, or misogynistic posts. Not so on Facebook anymore. Anyway, nowadays I see more anti-Trump stuff in the Political Pics thread than pro-Trump stuff, though that might be his own base turning on him. Bottom line, I don’t think the politics of this place is much of a factor at least at the moment.
I remember that post and I thought it said more about the intolerance of that poster than the forum.
This forum has been extremely dynamic when it comes to politics. Posters have also shown to be dynamic. I myself went from hate, love, and now hate again for Trump.
It’s been pretty back and forth with a pretty even equilibrium of posters on all sides engaging across time.
Hes not the first poster who thought the forum was too far right or far left and made some announcements of leaving. If someone feels that way, i think they’re probably the one who’s extremely left or right.
I’m Jewish and I have seen some borderline/coded antisemitic posts from 2 posters in particular I won’t name. But it’s nothing compared to the overt antisemitic stuff on Facebook I’ve seen wishing that Shitler would come back to “finish the job.” Clicking on almost any post there is asking for a headache these days. And I don’t think there’s many Jewish posters here to begin with. Although there’s been some questionable stuff here, I don’t think anyone is “targeted.”
I do think there used to be a pro-Trump tilt, but now there’s definitely an anti-Trump tilt. I don’t know how neatly that aligns with people’s politics since Trump is out of favor with many on the right as well.
In any case, I think if politics is a factor in this forum dying it’s a very minor one and hardly worth mentioning. These kind of forums are just not popular with Zoomers. And neither is working in Asia it seems.
I don’t think the younger generation of laowais would vibe with forumosa.
They post on the Taiwan reddit sub and have an almost zero tolerance for anything negative about Taiwan. Even wont hear a word out of line about the shitty rubbish vans.
I have never been either. Can tell folks the good and bad on his policies. But…not blindly anti in the fanatical category. On Canada he’s rightly called out supply management.
Ah, you just reminded me of that Reddit sub. I think most are woke college kids and/or ABCs (or ABTs) with chips on their shoulder. If anywhere is an echo chamber it’s that place.
