Besides some of the pretentious crap that I’ve seen in Taipei; I would have to say that Carnegies can provide alot of atmopshere inspite of the price. If ya want the dregs you pay for it. Carnegies certainly isn’t cept for a certain midday during the week. Did I just say that? NONONO…disregard. Moving right along… …G’night.

That’s merely your opinion to which you are entitled. Regular patrons/members with a broader sense of what constitutes value are in all likelihood more familiar with our extended Happy Hours and member benefits than yourself.

It’s a business, not a charity, and on any measure you care to take, Carnegies offers outstanding value for very professional and international class service and quality of its product.
Carnegies brought many firsts to Taiwan. It was a very big gamble by a group of investors that remain very focussed on the quality and reputation of the product.

Nicely put. Thanks for that. HG is right in touching upon ‘other joints’ and their pricing. NT$100 seems good now but where will the budget people go when six months from now consistent overheads and falling revenues result in closure? Our regulars and members don’t seem to have a problem with them and after all (I have said this before) we cater to those who come here not those that don’t. If I slashed prices in accordance with the wishes of a tiny minority (99.9% of whom don’t frequent this establishment), then there would be firstly an erosion in quality of food, drinks and service (no doubt eliciting complaints from the same I-want-my-cake-and-eat-it crowd) followed by secondly, job losses, bill payment defaults and closure. That would affect many people, not least our employees and customers.
Whilst I welcome constructive criticism, price-whingers get short shrift as they are invariably people we never see or cater to.

I’ve also never tried Alleycat’s, and I wonder if I should even bother since I’m wary of places foreigners rave about… Other pple here have mentioned that lately MJ’s pizza skimps on toppings and doesnt really fill you up…
My personal favorite pizza place in Taipei and for others who are used to American style thin crust pizza. The lunch special consisting of soup/salad, pepperoni/vegetable pizza and ice tea had me coming back every week. It didn’t hurt that it was only NT$180. The owner is friendly and everyone speaks English.

ok… WTF. i didn’t mean to make you (or anyone else) defensive. I’m a foreigner too and I rave about The Diner constantly and I think it wholeheartedly deserves its popularity among locals and foreigners alike. However, IN MY VIEW there are a bunch of other places that need not be named (since you named a few of them already; well… I’ll also throw in Din Tai Feng) that foreigners gravitate to, but that I don’t think are awesome like, at all. I was hoping in a 1-on-1 question type deal, I would get a more discerning/frank answer. OK? you yourself briefly vent about “overrated” places in your original post.

Was having a pissed off day yesterday. Sorry. As for your question, I’ve only had each one once I think. I much preferred Cain’s to MJs, which is not my preferred style – crust too thin, too crisp, not enough topping, too bland for my taste. Low price, sure, but not really value for money in my book. That’s why I only went once.
Cain’s I would go back for, except they’re all Canadians in there. Kidding! Kidding! Cain’s isn’t really in my neck of the woods, which is why I don’t often go there.
If I had to name just one place only I would choose ‘the diner’. Went again for dinner recently and the food was excellent, big portions (had burgers only) at very reasonable prices. The apple pie (ala mode) is just to die for. Service is good, too.
That being said I also happily eat at Carnegie’s, JB’s, Alleycats or ‘the italian job’ at any time. A proper meal will run more expensive than at ‘the diner’ but with the choices on offer and considering the size of the servings it’s IMHO worth it.
(I mean to say that my favorite meals there are not burgers and that the ingredients (?) of such meals are probably more expensive than that of a burger, so the prizing is still reasonable).
Anyone been having trouble getting into the Diner recently? I’ve practically given up on it because of the crowd issue. Shame, because I’ve never had a bad item in there.
Yeah, we were on our way there the other Saturday and ran into Tigeradolescent who was returning home with a Diner carryout after a 45-minute wait. We went to Sababa instead.
Went on a weekday and it was crowded, so left my phone number and walked around the block. By the time we were back they had a table ready (my phone rang just when I stood at the front door again), may have taken 15-20 minutes but it was worth the wait.
