So I’ll be moving to a new apartment this next week (from Tamsui to Hualien), I just did a quick count, since moving to Taiwan in 2007, this will be my 20th new home with a minimum stay of one month or longer. Definitely not bragging about it, and also not one of my hobbies. (Ah, and I actually don’t think I’ve been forced to move out from any of them)
But made me curious, has anyone lived in more places than this? Wondering if my total can be beat…
13 here in almost twice as long time.
Let me see…
Guojixueshe, Taipei
HsinHai road, Taipei
ShiDa road, Taipei
Hsinchu
Kuanfu North road, Taipei
BaDe road, Taipei
TongAn road, Taipei
Longtan
MinSheng E. road, Taipei
ZhongHsiao E. road, Taipei
Neihu road, Taipei
Zhonghwa Xinsiji, Hualien
Lunei road, Hualien.
Nope, not close to 20.
Gee, I thought I had a lot. I moved 6 or 8 times in the first two years. I have been in my current abode over 20 years and you’ll have to pry the keys from my cold stiff hands.
I’m in my eighth place since arriving 17 years ago. I honesty thought that was a lot, but maybe not.
Rented a lot for work and whatnot, but primary residence…I just counted. Kind of surprised only 6. I usually rent more than 6 places at any given time for work, but actual living, I thought it was more haha.
It also reminded me how much I absolutely LOATH moving house…!
I feel like an immovable object, a stone statue
2 places in the 90’s and then 1 place since then, I’m stuck ![]()
Great, fresh new topic! Interesting.
My number is 1 for six months, then I’ve been in my own house for 25 years and six months.
I’m very curious to see where you’ve been. @rob9221504, would you please detail all the places like @Flakman did?
I’ll stay on this rooftop until I or the building collapses, whichever comes first. Would be an absolute nightmare to move all the things I built here over the years. And that specifically includes the relationship with the landlord, the old wagaligongs downstairs, and the local police officers who come up for a chat on a regular basis when one of the newer neighbors decides to make yet another noise complaint.
Ha, alright, I’ll give this a shot.

Man, that’s a fairly good test of my memory. Think the longest I’ve stayed at one place is 2.5 years, my feet just get too itchy. Maybe I should see a shrink ![]()
You’d get double bonus points for offshore island.
Better late than never. We grow wiser with age ![]()
Wow. What is your top 5 learnings about Taiwan renting scene if you want to share with all of us? ![]()
I’m moving again next month and finding a flat in Taipei. I’m very tired of the high cost, low quality living there but the demand is always high. ![]()
I have stayed in about 14 residences also.
I kind of doubt anybody here has lived in as many cities as I have in Taiwan. Ok Rob is giving me a run for his money. @rob9221504
In the first few years in Taipei I seem to have moved an insane amount of times ( I also changed jobs about 5 times in those years and had numerous different visas). I also had at least two forced moves. It actually took me quite a bit of Brian
power to recall everywhere I have lived. Being a renter gives you flexibility, it’s a small island so I get itchy feet also. But I did live in Xindian for many years.
Starting 2000s…
Taipei (five)
NTC (two)
Miaoli city (one)
Taoyuan (three)
Taichung (two)
Kaohsiung (one)
Best place I’ve lived in was probably Taichung City. New apartments , reasonable rents , lots of space, sunny everyday , nice parks easy to get North and South and to go hiking .
Personally I would like to live in a quieter spot now , or at least I fantasize about it. But it’s so damn hard, if not impossible, to find a nice small town in Taiwan AND also to find one with convenient transport links for work.
Hmm let me think back upon the vast range of experiences I’ve had…
- Don’t rent in Taipei City.
#2-#5, well I’ll have to give them a bit more thought.

so far only one since my arrival in 2022 (in-laws house), hopefully next year can move to our new house, where I will most likely die given the stupid amount of money spent on that.
