Why Canada? Why?

Well, looks like the US pretty much tells Canada what to do now that there’s a Conservative government in power.
Ottawa will announce $15 billion in new spending on the Canadian military next week, CBC News has learned.

The country’s aging Hercules fleet will be replaced. (Canadian Press) A report by SRC, the CBC’s French language service, says the spending spree will be “Christmas in June for the Canadian Forces.”
I know it’s not the $3 Trillion that the US has spent, but $15 billion is a lot of money for us Canadians.

:help:

yeah, we should keep sending our troops out there with equipment from the 1960’s, and hope that they are smart (lucky) enough to stay alive …

read over your link a few times, and i’m missing the part where it says the US told harper to do anything.

if canada wants to keep sending people out in peace-keeping roles, the least it can do is outfit them with equipment made in this century …

The minister of defence and head of the military have been squabbling over how to invest in the military, and rather than decide between them, the Conservatives have obviously decided to make up a some lost ground while there’s money in the bank and sufficent public support to pull it off. All that equipment is, probably, needed… save for the planes (possibly). I’d rather see a national day care program in place, but… :idunno:

For employment reasons? hahahahahaha. Joking.

Seriously, you would want the Liberals to enact a national day care program? During the last election, Paul Martin’s spokesman stated that he didn’t trust Canadians with their money. I guess you hold the same views as Reid? You think creating a bloated program with a bunch of Liberal-appointed bureaucrats is the answer?

BTW, considering Liberal leadership candidate Joe Volpe’s predilection for accepting money from people under the age of 18, I wouldn’t trust any program involving money, Liberals, and children.

Did I say anything about the Liberals? They promised the program for ten years and it never happened.

Anything to share on topic this morning?

Well, you did say program rather than allowance. To me, this is synonymous with the Liberal position.

Top of the morning to ya

No, we shouldn’t be there in the first place.

read between the lines my friend.

Is that what you call killing innocent civilians in Afghanistan? “Peace-Keeping”? :unamused:

“A” day care program; not “the” day care program.
insert silly English teacher/ remedial class comment

Thoughts on buying THREE heavy-lift aircraft? Be great for quickly dispatching a rapid reaction force. Cost prohibitive though.

Let’s cut the crap people. The Liberals never had a national day care program. They were going to give the money to the provincial governments with no restrictions on how it was to be spent. The Tories simply gave the money directly to parents.

The agreement signed between the Liberals and the provinces was for ten years, but either side could cancel it at any time. The current federal government simply exercised its right to do so. There is no guarantee a Liberal federal government wouldn’t have done the same thing, likewise there is no guarantee the provincial governments would have actually put the money towards day care.

As for the military, soldiers who are properly equipped have purchased their own equipment. They were sent to the desert wearing forest green uniforms for Christ’s sake, and then only after they were able to hitch a ride on an American plane. The army’s trucks are so old spare parts no longer exist for them. Private towing companies are hired to move the artillery.

And that doesnt’ even scratch the surface of the rot that permeates our military.

Canadians want to send their soldiers hither and thither to keep the peace, wring their hands and wail if anyone gets hurt, but don’t want to give the army the equipment it needs to do the job. :loco:

C’mon Canada, pull your fucking head out of your ass!

DND has a rapid response team, its mandate: Disaster relief anywhere in the world.

Problem: No means of getting anywhere, so it has never been deployed - EVER.

A program is a program is a program – it still smells of statist Socialism. I would prefer Canadians receive a monetary allowance for child care as the lesser of two evils. I trust families with their money unlike the arrogrant elitists from the Eastern Establishment.

A small step on the road to improving Canada’s image within the world – an image that was weakened considerably from more than a decade of piss-weak Liberal rule.

About time we started putting our money where our mouth is

If Canada is going to have a military and have that military involved in various foreign interventions then they should properly outfit them. It’s criminal to do otherwise.

I have no idea about the day care program but do know that my wife’s sister was entitled to one year off at reduced pay after having her baby. So was her husband. That sounds fair and much better than the measly pittance afforded by Taiwan law.

Child maternity leave benefits and day care are two completely seperate issues. However, I agree wth you – Taiwan law for maternity and paternity leave is piss weak. One day for males is laughable. No wonder families,on average, are only have 0.96 kids. Taiwan will learn the hard way in the coming decades when it faces severe labor shortages!!! Why come here when placed like Singapore offer months off for maternity and paternity leaves (foreigners and locals) and 28 days vacation a year in most companies.

15 billion? That’s a good start. I used to work for a private company that supplied stuff to military bases in Canada. I went on some deliveries, and let me tell you, some of that equipment really did belong in a museum.

Next: health care…

(Canada does have a lot of good social programs, IMO)
Not enough people, unfortunately…

No, we shouldn’t be there in the first place.
yeah, let them rot …

best answer you got?

:snore:

of course, you take a worst case scenerio and smear one-and-all with the same brush.

happy fishing …

It’s about bloody time. I hope in the next budget they increase it even further. It’s about time we gave our troops the logistical & supply support that they have been lacking since the 2nd World War. It’s about time we took our thumb out of our ass, and realized that a geographically large country like Canada should at least try to foot some of the bill for some of our own defence requirements, instead of just piggybacking on Uncle Sam’s or Auntie Blighty’s shoulders.

The military wants to be recognized internationally for its own “search and rescue” skills, but it can’t even find its own bloody torpedo? And look at the apathetic comments from the Commander. Where do they recruit these clowns from–Tim Hortons?

I hope the Navy uses its chunk of money to make sure (1) no more subs need to be towed from the Atlantic or that subs have to be docked because no one can maintain them (2) Denmark doesn’t mock Canada again (3) hire better people.
