Why was Soong Chu-yu willing to be Lien Chan's deputy in the 2004 presidential election?

In the 2000 presidential election, Soong was the one who got more votes than Lien.

Why was Soong willing to be Lien’s Vice President in 2004?

If Soong had run for President and Lien for Vice President in 2004, the pan-blue coalition would have won for sure.

Spoiler effect.

Nobody knows that for sure.

Soong was the popular breakaway blue guy, who strategically thought it would be smart to get back in the fold (i.e. KMT ticket) in 2004.

Not only did those two old blue dudes lose; it was the beginning of the end of Soong’s PFP. What’s the point of having a party if you’re just the KMT’s deputy partner.

Guy

Seems a pretty typical story in countries that rely on popularity for voting, no?

Although for sure not the same situation, at all. A few comparisons could be made with Ke P going pro Chinese KMT alliance in this past election (2024). The cool thing to watch unfold in real time was the amazingly egocentric split amongst all the bad actors in Taiwan this round (live on tv no less :joy:), so we were saved from a very possible pro CCP Taiwanese government that very well could have been even worse than Ex Mr. Ma’s 8 year term of devolving Taiwans achievements.

These things can happen any election, people should always be on their toes, not just only before an election. As this past one showed. 3 powerful people were more or less aligned with a foreign governments’ will, China, against a DPP ticket that was quite weak and lack Lustre.
only their (Chinese centric trifecta) immature in fighting and egos saved us from that train wreck (again, ie. Ma).

We cannot always count on the CKMT, nor their allies, on being completely innept. We must assume eventually they will become at least somewhat capable of public speaking :smiling_face_with_tear: when they reach such levels of basic correspondence and intelligence, we are in for a real fight for existence.

Unlike before, in the 90s and early 2000s when they (rhe CKMT) actually did something for Taiwan, this no longer exists. The Chiense KMT party of today vs a few decades ago are vastlyndifferent and have vastly different goals and ideals. They have said it themselves, kn record. So it’s far from an opinion.
