Why wasn't the THSR built to stop at Taoyuan Airport?

Of course there is the transfer bus, that’s not my question… I have been wondering why at the construction phase of THSR they didn’t plan to have it stop inside the airport thus no need of this new airport express line they are building now…

2 reasons.

the first: The MRT was planned to go there all olong. Next year you will be able to ride it!

The second: The HSR and it’s stops are intended to bolster economic growth: Condos and commerce. No one wants to live at the airport.

What he said.

Plus, the land and right-of-way was probably cheaper and/or easier to purchase. Apparently that was the main rationale behind the rather odd HSR station positions.

It was probably related to local ‘ahem’ politician interests.
But one would also have to look at the map to see if it was completely feasible to route it through airport. All said and done once the link from the airport to the Taoyuan station is complete it will be pretty convenient.

The HSR was planned at the time of the French/Taiwan frigates scandal‎ … some guy from the government landed at the Charles de Gaulle airport and saw that it was good, having a HSR station 10 minutes by shuttle from the airport. It was the time that Taiwan was at the summit of their copying empire.

Or maybe it was the French themselves that did the design and planning of the HSR line … so, they had only one example … Charles de Gaulle airport.

They never route it ‘through’ an airport … they route it under or next to an airport.

It makes sense since there was always a plan for an MRT line. The HSR just doesn’t run often enough to be useful as an airport transport system.

Taiwan would be the perfect place to pioneer a train link through an airport. Imagine the fun of a level-crossing on 05L.
Tower - “Clear ILS runway approach, Dynasty 801. Ah hang on, HSR approaching. Pull up and go around, repeat, go around…”

Unless you route every train ‘through’ the airport … Schiphol airport is very convenient to reach by train, they have several trains per hour stopping there (every 10 minutes or so)

The HSR in Taiwan has a dense schedule.

I guess you’re right. The HSR can carry well over 100,000 people a day.

Frankfurt is also convenient now i guess, and Brussels is working on the new line … all straight and on ‘through’ the airport.

You could go from Schiphol all the way to London, Paris etc.

In Taiwan you need to change ‘trains’ to get south.

And again once you get to your destination since none of the stations are in the city centres except Taipei.

I used to fly to Amsterdam just because Germany has decided to impose a weird tax on all flights in or out of Germany starting 2011, so flying to Schiphol and taking the IC train straight to Berlin (30 euros each way if you buy a ticket early) was cheaper than flying straight to Berlin when the added airport tax (transfers, etc.) and the German tax was accounted for.

Besides with KLM there’s a 5 hour wait or longer for a flight to Berlin, because the plane comes in at 5 in the morning but the flight to Berlin doesn’t leave until 2:30. So no real time advantage there, and waiting at schiphol sucks because their wifi isn’t unlimited, after the 2 30 minute sessions they charge you a million euros per minute to use their slow wifi hotspot.

You need to join an airline club… free wifi in the club, unlimited.

I used to visit Germany, until a transit cop on the S-bahn to FRA checked my ticket, said it was invalid, having been purchased at 12 midnight, which was not the day of departure, for that it would have to be purchased at 0001 on the day of travel. 40 Euro fine. Deutschland will never see another of my Euros.
