Will (as in Last Will and Testament)

Can anyone recommend a lawyer to draw up a will valid in Taiwan that would allow me to leave assets to my folks back home in the UK?

Also if you know how much such a will would cost, I’d be grateful.

Here you go! This is my lawyer and he speaks English fluently.

Can you speak Chinese? There’s many local notaries you can use. You only need a notary if you’re trying to save money. They can tell you the different types of wills (written, verbal, etc.) that are valid in Taiwan law.

Notary costs you 3-10k

Lawyer costs 30k+

I have a friend with no kids (the situation is different if you have kids). His wife passed away some time ago and the laws here in Taiwan are such that the wife’s family had some rights to their assets and money. They didn’t have much but it was still a very bad situation when they went after after what they did have after the wife’s death, as anyone can imagine.

So prepare a will is the moral of the story.

If you have kids, your assets, etc. are split among the surviving spouse and kids. You can prepare a will so that the amount the different parties have a legal right to is lessened in favor of one or more of the parties. Most chances are, your kids are decent and there would be no issue.

The danger here is when you have no kids.
