Hi, I have been in Taiwan for 2 weeks and have been using the internet through a wireless USB stick. I may have gotten my SIM card banned for visiting cough adult entertainment websites. I am a foreigner and do not know the policy about such matters. Is there a way to “re-activate” the SIM card? If not, how much do they go for? Also, my wireless stick is awful; I get disconnected a minimum of 15 times a day and I have to re-plug and connect every time, which is a pain in the ass.
You need to be a little bit clearer. What does ‘wireless USB stick’ mean? Wifi? 3G SIM Card? Which company? How did you get a SIM card with data if you’re a foreigner whose been here 2 weeks? Why aren’t you just using DSL or stealing someone’s Wifi? Are you visiting? Do you live here? Lots of unclear things here.
If you’re using a mobile-phone type modem, you probably are going over your data cap, so they are disconnecting you. They can’t shut off your service because you went on porn. I think you might just be watching too much porn, going over your data cap.
My USB 3G stick gets booted occasionaly when I connect or disconnect a remote device by simply plugging the device in or pulling the plug. Go through the add device or eject device protocols properly or disconnect the 3G service before pluging in or removing the device and then turn it back on. Windows media player seems to conflict also. Turn off your stick before entering MP and then turn it back on.
USB 3G sticks with sim card are available at Chunghua in Banciao. About 800 per month for unlimited island wide service 24/7. They gave me mine in exchange for a 2 year contract. I use it exclusively when out and about. It seems to be as fast or faster than my home service. Louis speaks English at the phone store on the 2d floor and will treat you well. He’s the 2d in command so you can usually get really good service.
Thanks for the replies.
Mike, good questions. I am using a 3G SIM Card and it is Taiwan Mobile. My cousin let me borrow his USB stick while he is away. I don’t have DSL because im staying for 3-6 months and ISPs require 1-2 year contracts. I cannot access anyones Wifi connections where I live. Glad to know I wasn’t banned or anything like that due to watching porn ![]()
Enigma, my 3G USB disconnects at random. Sometimes in intervals of 2 minutes and sometimes it doesn’t disconnect for hours. Perhaps it is the stick itself, or maybe my laptop (it is going past 5 years old)
Btw, how can I get my 3G SIM card to work with my wireless USB again? If I did go over the data limit.
Can I insert the 3G SIM card in my Ipad 2 and surf the web? I’m not sure about the specifics on the card since my cousin let me borrow the wireless USB stick (containing the 3G SIM)
Taiwan Mobile offers an unlimited usage plan for 650 a month, so chances are that that your cousin is set up for that (you may want to ask him)…
There are many technical reasons why that can happen, one of them being marginal signal strength where you are located (or, rather, where the modem is located), but if you were to go over the monthly packet limit (assuming you were using a plan with such a limit) the modem would simply not connect at all until the beginning of the next month.
