In fairness, and without drawing any parallels, you’d presumably agree that if someone succeeds in chopping their foot off, they really are disabled now!

Personally I’d also say they should be allowed to chop their foot off if they really want to, but I’m pretty liberal like that.

That’s up to the doctor, I suppose, with appropriate safeguards around informed consent. I don’t imagine insurance would cover it.

I’m thinking about plastic surgery in general, which can involve (say) trimming bone off someone’s jaw to make their face more heart-shaped. Or even having teeth removed and replaced with more beautiful fake ones. (Edit: or super risky leg-lengthening surgeries). Is there a distinction other than whether we think it’s a good idea?

Assessed how, and by whom? I feel like it’s a bit circular – you think it’s a bad idea, so it’s a mental health problem.

I don’t necessarily even disagree, but I’m finding it hard to pin down exactly why I think one example isn’t crazy and the other is. Jaw surgery gives a perceived social advantage, I guess?
