WTB: Taipei Living and Taipei Bus Guides

Taiwan Where Can I Find...?

I read from my various surfing that there is a book called “Taipei Living” which is very usefull for foreigners. What bookstore can I buy this from. So far the only bookstore I know is Eslite and PageOne.

Also, are there any Taipei English bus guides that can be bought at the above bookstore or other bookstore.

Hi,
the “Taipei Living” is available at the “Community Services CENTER” at No.25, Lane 290, Zhong Shan North Road, Sec. 6. Tel.: 2836 8134.
It is about 700 NT. If you live too far away, perhaps they can send it to you if you pay them by postal remittance. It also has a chapter called Utllities and Transport where the most commonly used bus routes are listed!
Apparently there is also a complete listing of city bus routes available. It’s “The Bus Guide to Taipei” by Ian Oades. Should be sold by most bookstores… But might be a little bit outdated!

I’ve seen “Taipei Living” in book stores now and then (last time was two weeks ago in the Eslite underneath the National Theater). It was the first thing I bought when I first came here because I remembered that we had the same when we lived in Seoul, and it had been really useful - Getting most of my Taipei info from Forumosa, I don’t remember opening my “Taipei Living” once :unamused:

As to the bus guide - I’ve never seen it. I tried to ask once in a while when I happened to think of it while browsing a book store and then usually forgot about it. I usually just walk up to the bus stop and check if any bus is going my direction or take a taxi :blush: . Btw, there are MRT maps for free that list all the bus no for each MRT station. And I found a (free) booklet at Hsimenting station a while ago, titled “Taipei Transportation Guide”, that has maps of every single MRT station (plus the respective bus numbers). Very helpful but unfortunately all in Chinese.

Bus guide is very old, but most of the lines are still the same I think. Supplement it with an MRT map that shows the MRT link lines.
A few bookstores have the bus guide. One is the Shida Uni bookstore on Heping E Rd (more or less opposite the intersect with Shida Rd).

Caves has a pretty good selection of this type of book, including bus guides and Taipei Living, I’m pretty sure.

The easiest to find Caves is on Zhong Shan N. Rd, between a Subway sandwich restaurant and a KFC. It’s not far from the intersection of Zhong Shan and Min Sheng.

You might want to try the 7-11. On the other hand, the Taipei MRT Route Map has the bus numbers and locations at the MRT stations clearly marked. You don’t need to know Chinese to figure where to pick them up.

So with that information, if you need to get somewhere, ask the people what bus to take from the MRT station and most of the time, people can tell you that. Travel around a few weeks using this system and before you know it, you’ll be an expert :wink:
