Watching this as I write on GTV, its like a Japanese show with same set up. Anyone watch this , I like it and always nice to see how Taiwanese these immigrant and/or visitors are (they all fit different groups). So you think they go on TV for fun or are they paid? At the end I like the often fun discussion on international culture
differences.
They are being paid. One of my friends is on this show every few months. He told me that they pre-discuss the stories they will tell on the show and the producers change them to make them more „spicy“ or funny and even give them completely scripted stories to tell.
Nice , fun and extra money
Maybe it’s just the tidbits I’ve caught over the years of living here… But this show seem to do such a disservice to us “foreigners” They play up stories or just say things locals want to hear about “foreigners” to play into their insular views about “foreigners”
TV shows only care about ratings, so they are only going to say or do stuff that their audience wants to see.
They get paid, but not much (at least according to one of the long-time participants).
They are usually famous foreigners who work in the local modeling, commercial, or entertainment industries, but sometimes they also have complete random foreigners on there.
If you’re interested, you can call the number that pops up at the end of the show.
These types of shows are massive cringe, and they (intentionally) make foreigners look like colorful, hapless clowns, which is exactly what their audience wants to see. Watch only if you enjoy having your eyeballs dissolved in hydrochloric acid.
In most episodes I’ve seen, the foreigners do that themselves.
See…
I didn’t mean the stories they told. I meant just by their demeanor.
They’re encouraged to ham it up, and I’m sure the producers choose the foreigners based on how well they fit the stereotypes.
Sorry but I think it’s awful.
The entire premise of the show is for foreigners to talk about how “In Taiwan you do X, but in my country we do Y” (usually followed by a loud fake “WOOOW” sound effect).
This just enforces stereotypes of foreign countries, while also furthering the notion that foreigners and Taiwanese are completed different species.
Side note, I was asked to be on it. Probably a sign I’ve been here too long.
That makes sense.
It’s fun to see them occasionally go off the cuff though.
Once the host asked the tall Swedish guy (not Lukas) why he moved to Taiwan, and he said, “我被騙了.”
How did they find you and ask ?
