You - the Man who would be King

Do you see a celebrity like Leonardo DiCaprio and think if you moved to a third country you could be things you can’t be in your country

Tall
Rich
Attractive to the opposite sex
Different

Before you go, see the plastic surgeon. He can take 20 years off your face. You will arrive in another country appearing 20 years younger

In Taiwan?
Thailand?
Nepal?
Costa Rica?
Where?

The movie is based on 2 actual people who inspired Rudyard Kipling

Hopefully I won’t suffer a similar fate.

One of my favourite films, by the way.

Careful with that, as it’s a day of vengeance.

Never seen it. The scenery looks so fake.

Just hoping to be with a partner; not interested in being a “king.” :joy:

I think the number of expats looking for someone out of their league has dropped in recent years as these countries grew wealthier and, with the spread of the internet, more knowledgeable of the outside world, and more able to recognise a loser as a loser, no matter where they come from.

You are no doubt right; such opportunities are vanishing.

But is the cup half full?

The King part of my post is a metaphor not absolute

I was looking at the life of some rock star and thinking there’s some place in which One could have higher status - even though with globalization such places are fewer.

That’s true for anyone reading this

1 example of a Measurable
When I moved to Taiwan I was suddenly tall. I left and came back and was no longer tall, high school guys were now taller; evidently Taiwan turned a corner 16 years before. Even In USA, I stumbled into a place where I was taller again; local population in a state had generations of whites a little shorter than most

There are such countless metrics. On Trinity lane in Cambridge UK, I’d be considered ignorant but educated in another place

My brother went to Philippines and married a girl 20 years younger. A white girl from USA probably would not go for that.

On one trip to Taiwan on the plane I met an old white guy. He said his first wife was from Thailand, that she died and he was returning to Thailand to find a wife again like wife number 1.

He was searching where what he had to offer would be acceptable

One can think of the Converse as well. If you want to be humbled, move to NYC. The best of the best in every field are there. In Palo Alto CA or Cambridge Massachusetts if you only have one PhD or never founded a company you are lower status

In my town growing up in USA, Mexican girls were highly sought after. They were different.

In Mexico, those girls would have been just another Mexican. These girls raised their status not by moving from 1st world country to 3rd world but rather 3rd world to 1st world

I used to work in Cambridge and most people I knew there, including graduates from the university thought they were clever but actually knew nothing about life and invariably ended up failing.

I was also offered a job at the University itself but turned it down due to conflicting arrogance on both sides :smirk:

I used to have purple converses but a lady-friend from years former stole them. She was from Cambridge haha

The bitterness is thicc today.
