The real way to test how good your Chinese is, is to ask yourself if you can use the following words correctly in a sentence.
即使，既然，不然，即刻，畢竟，竟然，究竟，彷彿，不僅，其實，偶而
Plus know all the measure words and how to use them correctly.
You must be really advanced if you know how to use all those words in various sentences. Congratulations to you.
Thanks, there’s a few others I forgot like 如果，突然，然而，就是，對，還，或者 and so on.
I do it all the time. I’m always trying to think of the right words to use in a given situation. If i don’t know it, then it means there’s a gap in my knowledge and I want to fill that gap.

I was kind of expecting that from the ‘your Chinese is so good!’ in the thread title. If he was like me and still had a whopping English accent then that would more likely be ‘your Chinese is so bad!’, or perhaps ‘Is that Chinese you are speaking?’
Yeah, I just say “謝謝”.
It’s not a compliment anyway, by any stretch of the imagination. It’s an expression of surprise that a non-Asian face is capable of saying something in an Asian language.
Can you imagine if white people in the US or UK said “your English is so good” to every non-white person they came across? When those videos surface on YouTube, the white person is called “racist” and told to “get with the times” and “don’t you know they’re a third generation immigrant and English is the only language they’ve known their whole lives?”
I used to get so many compliments.
Wow, you must have lived here a long time- “no, only a year.” Omg then how come your Chinese is so good? Did you grow up here?
Then five years pass and my Chinese level remains the same. “Wow, your Chinese is good.”
Then ten years pass “wow- no wonder your Chinese is so good”
Then 15 years pass “oh ok, is your wife Taiwanese？”
Then 20 years pass and my Chinese is still about the same level “oh…” awkward silence…
By ANY stretch of the imagination? That’s cynical. I have complimented people when I hear them speak Tagalog with a solid Filipino accent that I don’t expect them to have and I meant it. Sure, when I hear Filipino spoken with a strong foreign accent (like mine) I don’t say anything
Don’t over think this. Just be grateful that they recognize your effort. It doesn’t have to be more than that.
Is it very different from telling someone “your English is so good”? Admittedly, when I lived in New York City, I almost never heard that or said that
I remember meeting someone from Mainland China who had just finished college n the Philippines. His accent when he spoke English was like that of someone from a high brow coño-but-in-good-way elite Philippine private school. I could not believe he had only been in the Philippines for no more than 4 years at the time. You bet I complimented his English, more than once, and meant it.
When I studied Chinese in Shanghai they had a chapter in their textbook where they discussed this very issue.
The story was a German guy who spoke terrible Chinese but never improved because Chinese people kept telling him how good it was. He thought they were giving him an honest and accurate assessment, but they were just encouraging him.
Had a Filipino family in Taiwan compliment me on my Filipino once. They were pretty confused when I said I was from the PH

Yes its just encouragement, but they do it for Asian people too when they have good chinese (not only saying ni hao) When i was in chinese school you constantly hear teachers boasting about how good certain students (korean or japanaese) chinese is.
Whether you get this reaction out in public would depend on if you obviously look non Taiwanese.
