The 1940s was a big decade for cinema. Hollywood at it’s best - the Golden Era, thrillers, Hitchcock, ‘that’ film which is always voted best of all time, screwball comedies, big studios and big stars. I think my fave Hollywood film of the era is Casablanca, but my vote has to go elsewhere. The Bicycle Thief comes close, but Les Enfants du Paradis just has a special exuberance that earns it my vote.

For me it was between The Maltese Falcon and Double Indemnity, and I’m still not sure how Billy Wilder lost.

One of the things I like about them both is that in each movie the Hollywood factory, with its focus on cycle time and editing, actually helped to churn out art.
