“they” is the third-person plural pronoun, subjective case, in the English language. There’s nothing wrong with using it.

He (clearly) wasn’t making a grammar point, he was directing the poster’s attention to the fact that repeatedly referring to local people as “they” is othering, reductive, and potentially offensive.

It’s probably just a hyper-correction. You can only listen to ignorant foreigners order lady meat with lady milk so many times before you go all Pavlovian on the syllable.

I wonder what the actual Korean word was, but in general, “small face” IS a compliment in Korea for sure. You can check this youtube video, Weird Things Koreans Do, where the first thing on the list is “small face” thing.
