Your music, Your kid

I got an old 10cc album a few days ago…now, everytime “Rubber Bullets” starts playing, my daughter (age 3) starts bouncing around and singing the chorus “Load up! Load up! Load up with rubber bullets!”

So…what kind of music do you and your kids enjoy together?

My duaghter hasn’t really gotten into music yet. She likes it when mom sings some old Chinese kids songs. I’m hoping to get some speakers here soon for my computer so I can crank out some real music for her.

Wierdest thing I’ve ever seen though, was my firends daughter back in the States bouncing around to 2-Pac.

the boy is only 1y4m, but he has already shown great interest in the who. he tries to turn it back on when the cd finishes …

Here is what’s on my boy’s iPod:

My son (2), doesn’t care too much about what mom wants to listen to. He says “play the jazz” - he likes Ella Fitzgerald best these days. Then there’s “Cotton Fields” and “Streets of London” and “Who Painted the Moon Black”. And a CD of a Taiwanese celloist. And Wil Smith’s Big Willie Style (yes I freely admit to having that). Kids’ CDs, any song about trains. He has free access to a good stack of CDs, and can put them on, choose the track and adjust the volume. Grandpa turns it down, son says “too quiet” and turns it up. Unfortunate for us, he recently discovered that ever powerful button - REPEAT…

Little T/man such eclectic tastes and NO Chinese music at all! Just surprised, that’s all.

Well, he’s grown up listening to that stuff… doesn’t know anything else… We don’t listen to ICRT or any other radio… I expect he will learn what kids his age listen to eventually… Don’t know if he’ll like it.

TM -
The young cowboys Mp3 player looks similar.
With a touch more soul music.
He also is getting into some classical - just discovering that genre.
But he likes rock & soul a lot for now.
He’s just 10, almost 11, so he has a lot of time.

My 2 month old was just fussing and crying, so I stopped playing Beethoven piano sonatas and tried something new: Babatunde Olatunji, Circle of Drums (African drum music). I picked him up and started to dance with him, and he immediately stopped crying and went to sleep. The books say infants dislike rhythmic “bassy” music, but he seems to love this.
I plan to expose him to all types of music as often as possible, with the hope of encouraging the wiring of his brain and also instilling a love of music from an early age.

The Beatles.
Classic Wailers.
Bach. Both of’em

Rocksteady. That’s what the young’uns needs.
