Your WTF moment when coming to Taiwan

2003, first time here. Took a taxi from the airport to my motel. Woke up the next morning and was organizing my stuff when holy shit, my passport was nowhere to be found. Then the phone rang, guy at the desk said he had my passport. wtf?

As it turned out my passport had been missing for more than 12 hours because it had slid out of my pocket in the taxi, the driver had found it, and had then driven out of his way to drop it off at my motel. WTF?!

Most of these are basically privileged people from more developed countries’ complaint about things in a less developed country (except the red envelope one which is actually quite funny). It’s really unoriginal. You’d say the same thing wherever you go.

No sick days permitted under ANY circumstances…that might have changed now with the Corona Virus.

Ok, how about this: when I first went to Japan and saw they ate salad for breakfast, I was like…wtf.

I came around to it eventually, though. I actually kind of like it now. Maybe just because I like eating vegetables. But I only do it when in Japan.

I think many eat salad for every meal nowadays.

That’s Chinese style whataboutism. Taiwan is a developed country. Personal hygiene or table manners are not only for the uber rich, most middle income countries have it nailed by now.

Amongst developed countries there are more developed ones and less developed ones. Taiwan is 120% a less developed one.

this :point_up_2: is the @Gain we all know

I’m from Florida. It is always fun to watch someone experience a Palmetto bug glide. I cook most of my own food as I can’t get over the conditions that much of the food is prepared in. Last night, I went to a place that I liked before but the food was cold. People don’t like salads here but they will eat cold dead food that’s been cooked hours before.

It’s quite an experience the first time. With hindsight it’s obvious that they could fly, but you just can’t envision them actually doing it.

I’ve learned something today: Palmetto bug. Cheers!

“ The infamous cleaning ladies in the men’s restroom” agreed. I’ve seen this in Thailand as well. I feel there should be a Labour law prohibiting this.

And they don’t seem to have a lot of control over where they are flying so you’re not really sure which way to go to get outta the way. That is why it is so disconcerting. Cold weather is good to thin them out. Come July they are crawling all over the place.

God that’s probably the worst thing about it. They look so incredibly stupid when they fly. Just ridiculous. I hate it.

They’re more like gliders, or falling with style.

Wait, what? Doesn’t everyone do this? It’s certainly something I was doing decades before I came to Taiwan.

I was in China before Taiwan so I got the vast majority of my WTFs out of the way there. Biggest one here was hiking in Yilan back when I first got here and almost walking into a massive spiderweb with a golden orb-weaver the size of my face. Nearly fell down from jumping away so fast.

Since we’re mostly people from more developed countries who came to a less developed country and were specifically invited to say things about what shocked them in that country and not other countries, what did you expect?

I compared Taiwan to middle income countries. Personal hygiene and eating etiquette haven’t been a problem in middle east, Balkans or eastern Europe for decades (unless they are in the middle of war or something).

I didn’t tell you to shut up. I said it was unoriginal, which is true.
