Who said anything about shutting up? I’m wondering why you expected anything “original” as that clearly was not requested or expected. Why should anyone’s personal WTF moments coming to a new culture be “original”? I can’t see why anyone would expect they should be.

- Hearing a loud burp as I was getting into a Taxi.
- Buying ice cream with red beans inside when I thought they were chocolate chips.
Both on the very first day on the island.
That is similar to my WTF moment my first time in Japan buying green ice cream. Yeah, that wasn’t mint. Lesson learned.
You can replace Taiwan with any country close to the tropic and get the same feedback. It’s like no one bothered to do any homework before they traveled.
I didn’t! I was tired of Korea and really, really wanted a change.
So I leave Korea. I showed up in Taipei at night, and got to Taipei Train Station and to my motel. The next day I walk across the street (across the street only) to the 7-11 and I’m dripping with sweat. This was July. WTF!
A few weeks later I was back in Taiwan, signed up for Mandarin school, etc. Walking along the road and get a little whiff of something very off. The smell intensifies as I approach this cart. Stinky tofu. Never heard of that before. WTF!
Gain does make a fair point, there.
With minimal research I could have found out that cockroaches can fly. Or loofahs grow on trees. Or snake soup is bony and insipid.
Oh and if you find a red envelope on the street with money inside supposedly it’s for ghost weddings or something. But seriously though you are supposed to take it to the police because someone could have dropped it… if it stays unclaimed for a month it’s yours.

If you see anything lying around that isn’t yours, just leave it.
Well if we did our “homework”, then we’d be denying ourselves these WTF moments which make traveling and living overseas so much more interesting, vibrant, exciting and thrilling.
Imagine encountering @Gain on your first day in Taiwan. 
To be fair this thread serves a similar purpose.
Sometimes you need the surprise of trying pidan without somebody on here letting you into the secret first.
