Yuma SouthWestern Grill: CLOSED

Went there last night with my girlfirend. We had the dry rub BBQ ribs and rosemary lime chicken, with pumpkin soup each for starters. The food was delicious with large portions. The mains come with rice and coleslaw. The pumpkin soup tasted authentic (at least from a Southern California native point of view), was rich and flavorful and is nothing like the corn starch and sugar-added pumkin soup you get at other restaurants in Taiwan. Chicken and ribs are tender (not overcooked) and have a pleasant, smoky aroma that only comes from cooking over an open flame. Service was efficient from a waiter that spoke excellent English and Chinese (I ordered in English, my GF in Chinese). Final damage was $820 for 2 people, which included two main dishes with sides, 2 soups and an Iced Tea. For the volume of food that they deliver along with the taste and freshness, I consider this to be a good value. When I went, they were also playing 80’s pop/alternative music, which was a nice bonus. “I’ll be back…!” :smiling_imp:

I took my wife here on Saturday evening. She loves Mexican food, but she’s fairly critical of the stuff she usually finds overseas (I’m not, because I have no idea what it’s supposed to taste like). Not so in this case. The manager was excellent, polite, attentive, informative and helpful. He took us to our table, came back for our order, chatted with us and helped us choose, took our order himself (classic style, repeated everything we said as we said it and as he wrote it down, and then repeated it all again word for word when we’d finished ordering, no mistakes here), and came back twice at appropriate intervals to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Just enough attention without being Basil Fawlty, and very generous considering the restaurant was filling up rapidly.

We both ordered the pumpkin soup on account of its numerous recommendations here, all of which I am now in a position to endorse. The hand cut fries were delicious (cut and fried in the jacket!). We underestimated greatly the size of the portions. I could hardly finish my fries, and we had to take some home. The appetizer (tortillas), was very generous, and again we had to take some home.

I ordered half a chicken, expecting something the size of a quail, and ended up with a massive plate half full of soft fluffy rice (yum, spicy seasoning), and half full of an enormous half carcass which looked like it had once been a turkey (the photo does not do it justice, I assure you). The meat was very tender, and well cooked (none of this ‘still bleeding’ business you often see). I don’t know what they did to the skin, but it was a real treat to eat (I usually ditch chicken skin, but this was irresistible), spicy and crunchy.

My wife ordered the Nevada Nachos, which came in a massive bowl, piled high just as in the photo. This was another 外帶, as neither of us could have finished this alone, still less in one sitting with everything else we ordered.

The service was fast. We had a movie to go to next, and I was concerned that we might be pushed for time (we’d allowed ourselves two hours). No worries. We received all our dishes within half an hour of our orders, which I thought was pretty amazing given that there were three large parties in the restaurant at the same time as us, and another couple of tables with at least four people at them. The fries were intelligently provided within the first ten minutes, giving us something to chew on while the rest arrived (which it did, in quick succession).

I found the general decor and atmosphere very pleasant. It’s broad, open, and feels relaxed. The interior design is well coordinated, and the pictures on the walls are tasteful and sensibly chosen. The music isn’t too loud, and since I’m no judge of Mexican music all I can really say is that it was inoffensive. I have no idea what good Mexican music is supposed to sound like, but this didn’t give me indigestion or anything, and was considerably easier to listen to than the ubiquitous ICRT.

If you cannot persuade Dragonbones to have you over for one of his mouthwatering hand cooked Mexican meals, then I would definitely recommend Yuma. Even if you’re as unfamiliar with Mexican food as I am, I’m sure you’ll find plenty on the menu to satisfy you. My wife and I have been to three different Mexican restaurants in Taipei apart from Yuma, and this is definitely the best by a very wide margin.

Went back on Friday. This time we ordered two orders of ribs, the Peri Peri (spicy) and the cranberry/honey. You’re mileage may vary, but my cousin and I both found that the sauces were much too tangy for our palates… bordering on sour. Next time I’m going back to the dry rub, which enhanced the smoky flavor of the ribs vs. covering it up with so much sauce. Service was friendly, accurate, and efficient like the last time I went.

I’ve been meaning to post something about Yuma for a while now.

I’ve been a fan for some time now and persuaded the wife to try it out a while back. Since then we’ve both been back many times and brought the kids and other friends. We also went at least every other day over Chinese New Year.

I don’t want to recommend anything in particular on the menu, since everyone has their own tastes, but I am particularly fond of the half chicken, especially the peri peri one.

This place is excellent value for money (especially the lunchtime menu, available till 5pm), and the service is fantastic.

If you haven’t tried this place out already, then I can’t recommend it enough.

Yes very good. My wife and I went last Saturday night. Had the lime and rosemary chicken and the three amigos. We will be back again.

it is really good food.

The chicken is without a doubt the best in town, very tender, juicy and delicious.

Just wanted to say cheers for yesterday Alan, didn’t get to see you when we left.

Food was spot on as was everything else.

Ta mate

Had the veg quesadilla, veg skewer thing and prawn skewer from the new menu on Sunday. Very nice.

Any coffee options yet?

Mmm… I thought the comments were too good to be true… but I was wrong.

Ate their twice already. The Peri Peri chicken is great and so are the Pulled Pork Nachos.

Went to Yuma for the first time Sunday for a photo meet.
Went to Yuma for the second time the next day with the wife.

Good, good eats. Excellent service. My god, competent, friendly servers. Unbelievable. :bravo:

Everything Alan touches is gold. No wonder it’s a 'mosan magnet. There were at least eight there on Sunday.

After reading all the reviews I was pretty anxious to try out Yuma, I went tonight with a couple of friends back from the states, as we were all missing some good ole’ Tex-Mex :discodance: We ordered a Sante Fe Salad, Pulled Pork Nachos, a Whole Chicken (Peri Peri), and a half order of ribs. The Sante Fe salad was fresh and crisp, and the best part of the salad was it wasn’t iceberg lettuce!! flavor wise not bad. The nachos I thought were the weakest part of the meal, flavor wise it wasn’t bad but the nachos weren’t hot enough causing the cheese to harden, making it hard to eat with your hands. We actually had to cut it with a knife to eat it. In my opinion I think good nachos need to have that (melted cheese) pull to it. The chicken however was very flavorful! some pieces were really juice, I think we only had 1 piece that was dry and that was the breast which is understandable considering the chicken must have been precooked inorder to get on your table that fast. The ribs were solid, good flavor, and cooked to a nice texture. The price here is really good considering big portions. Alcohal was cheap I think it was only $100NT for a beer which is really good for restaurant standards. But overall not a bad experience, nice cozy atmosphere and great staff. Great job Alan on your staff’s standards probably some of the best i’ve had in a long long time :bravo: . I will be back for a drink and some of the other stuff on the menu.

Better late than never. Finally went to Yuma last night, with my family and spook’s family. Fantastic. Nachos, salad, ribs, chicken, pitchers of margaritas and a chocolate cake. All was great, no complaints at all. . . . well, except that we did run into the 'mosan formerly known as fredsmith there, but that’s not really the proprieter’s fault. Anyway, if you haven’t tried it yet you really owe it to yourself. If you have, you know what I mean.

We had a lovely dinner at Yuma the other night – thanks Alan! It was also nice to run into other Forumosans there, which has happened quite often. If you haven’t been yet, check it out! I like the Caesar salad, fries and ribs quite a lot.

I took a group of work colleagues there the other week. Everyone was most impressed by the service, bill, and price.

For the price, it’s a great value. Five of us ate and drank (mostly the latter) for like $3500. But, for the love of god, put some guaccamole or more veg on the menu! Local avocados sell for a pittance when ripe; take advantage.

I had a pleasant dinner there on Thursday night and oops, I forgot my backpack there. I was a little panicked because I had some souvenirs and memory cards in there that were irreplaceable. However they held my bag for me and I picked it up the next day. This is pretty normal coming from a restaurant but its the kind of good-will that makes a customer want to return again and again.

I usually go at lunchtime or in the afternoon and often can’t stomach big slabs of meat at that time, so I tend to go for the chicken or veg nachos, which is enough for my delicate birdlike frame. They come smothered in roasted bell peppers, onions, lettuce, guacamole, salsa and sour cream, in my experience. In fact, those nachos are the main reason I go to Yuma (apart from young Effie, of course). And that daft African bloke.

The food, the service, and the ownership are top-notch. I’m there at least once a week, have introduced at least five or six friends to Yuma so far.

Alan, is there anything that can be done about the ventilation system without breaking the bank? I sometimes come away stinking of smoke and oil after eating at Yuma. It won’t keep me or anyone else away because the food is too damned good, and the problem isn’t huge, but I wonder if there’s anything that can be done. Maybe it’s just the way it is with a restaurant serving such a wide selection of smoked meats.

Hope I didn’t come across as critical. I love the place. The kitchen staff is a fine tuned machine and Effie (is that her name?) is a doll. I had the very nachos you mentioned last night and they we great; lots of bell peppers just as you mentioned. I’m at the point where my frame is getting away from me though, so I can’t munch out on a whole portion of ribs and fries like I used to. Just thought some fresh (as in cold/raw) veg alternatives besides the great salads they already have, might be an idea. E’s idea for tuna also has my mouth watering. Maybe it’s just the summer heat and the fact that we always eat outside. Love that about the place, too!
