Zhongli to Kaohsiung

I have 4 days off and want to travel from Zhongli to Kaoshiung. I think I must get the HSRL from Taoyuan? Anyway these are my questions.

  1. I think I cannot get the high speed train from Zhongli and I must go to Taoyuan? Is that right? Where do I catch the train in Taoyuan?
2 Can someone tell me about frequency? How often do they run and when (if possible)
  2. What is the cost and do I need to book in advance? I was thinking of just going to the station tomorrow?
  3. Anything else I should know?

Thanks.

Yes, the Internet and google or duckduckgo is your friend, as is google maps to find the nearest HSR station.
Don’t need to book in advance. Can buy same-day HSR tickets at the station.

Thanks–good to know I don’t need to book in advance. Does anyone know the cost of a ticket (Taipei to Kaoshiung price is fine) or something about frequency? Are they very regular or only 3 or 4 a day? I looked online but couldn’t discover this.

In Zhongli station I have seen one platform with Kaoshiung indicated. I assume I can buy the ticket in Zhongli and travel straight to the HST link in Taoyuan? The fact I am a non Chinese speaker means I need to do as much pre preparation as possible.

If anyone can answer these questions it will be a big help.

You can find everything here. I also suggest you book in advance. https://en.thsrc.com.tw/

Advance discount can be as low as 65% of normal fare. That being said , the TRA train can get you Kaoshiung central as fast as 3.5 hours and cheaper if your not near bullet train Station which is not also in central Kaoshiung but in Zyoying (thus the name)

I’m pretty sure Taoyuan TRA station is different from Taoyuan HSR station, so you’ll need to take a bus or taxi to get to the HSR. I think they run every 20-30 minutes at peak travel times (morning and evening). In the afternoons, less frequently but still every hour or so, maybe less. About $1440NT from Taipei to Kaohsiung in the non-reserved seating car, but my fiance and I got seats easily as soon as we got on the train.

Many thanks. I assume the sign to Kaoshiung I see in Zhongli station will be an ordinary train link to Kaoshiung? Is the bullet train a lot quicker than the 3.5 hours mentioned? Finally will a taxi understand me if I ask him to go to HST or bullet train station in English?

Just show the taxi driver a picture of the HSR and say Taoyuan, they’ll understand. Yes, way faster - under 2 hours.

Splurge and take HSR (aka gaotie).

Take a train numbered in the 600s if you can (the ones numbered in the 800s stop all over the place).

Bring a mask—you’ll need it to enter the station.

Enjoy!

High Speed = Gao+tee (better say taoyuan or Zhong-Li Gao-tee to maybe sure they do not send you to taipei). The high Speed Rail is closer to Zhong-Li than Taoyuan and depending where in Zhong-li you are you can maybe take MRT(Taoyuan) to the High Speed Rail station. All this being said TRA Puyama takes 3hours 11 mins Center city to Center City. In Kaohsiung the High Speed Rail does not go to the city Centre and as result reduce any time savings, so search where in Kaoshiung you want to go for better options (Puyama Train carriages are very nice BTW!)

You can also get the Airport MRT from Zhongli (Huanbei) to the HSR station.

Many thanks. I think I am staying near to the Buddhist monasrey
Fo Guang Shan. Anyone know which station would be nearer?

You mean this place?

If from here you can take a bus from the Zhongli Main Bus ( Google Maps ) station to the High Speed rail station by taking bus number 170. There will be signs inside the building so you know which area to stand and wait for bus 170 (usually quite a few other people lining up to go to the high speed station as well).

Many thanks. I might travel normally on the outward and come back on the bullet. Anyone know which station is nearer to the Dashu area of Kaoshiung–MRT or HRT?

I am a bit confused about the prices on the HRT as there seem to be many different types of ticket. I’m guessing it will be around 1000 NTD?

Sir, the high speed rail is (as you might expect) abbreviated as HSR. There is no “HRT.”

You may wish to take some time and actually read responses to your many queries, as your simple questions have been for the most part answered.

It’s around 1300 each way. I take the HSR regularly. A bit more if you reserve a seat, or go first class of course.

Why is this all so difficult for you? Taking the HSR is the easiest thing. Just rock up and go - you don’t even have to talk to anyone.

There is bus service from Zyoying (both Bullet train and TRA trains) station. There is no MRT to the temple area, its not in the urban city area. There is limited bus service so make sure you arrive/depart before bus service ends otherwise Taxi/uber would be only other options. See thier story (missed the bus) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx1_-202MHw

Okay, many thanks. I guess the questions did get repetitive. Thanks for providing answers. Much appreciated.

There is a TRA train station in Dashu, but I don’t know about the routes or times.

Taxi from Zouying HSR station would be my choice both ways. YMMV
