100,000 Child Slave Prostitutes in Taiwan

100,000 Child Slave Prostitutes in Taiwan
taiwaninfo.org/info/child/child3.html
That number does not include any slave prostitutes over 18 years of age. How is it that this can exist in a developed society?

How can I tell you how many brothels there are when I don’t have that Japanese book that tells me where they all are ? even if I did it’s probably in Japanese.

A brothel by my definition: Any building or structure where a person can pay for sex or sexual acts. I asked a lot of my university students and they said that 9 out of 10 KTV’s offer these kinds of services. Barber shops that have no customers inside and provocatively dressed women are a safe bet as well. There are also spas and skin care clinics that obviously offer this kind of service.
I am not sure about Beetle nut vendors? Anybody know?

And don’t forget JUKEs Urban Cafe, or whatever it’s presently called. Every time I’ve gone there I got screwed.

Technicaly, it’s not a brothel unless you paid to get screwed.

100,000 sounds a dubious figure to me. Where did they get this number? If there were so many child prostitutes, I think the problem would be far more visible, wouldn’t you? While large numbers of Aboriginal girls may have been forced into the sex trade in the past, I doubt the problem is anywhere near as rampant now, if only because of tighter legislation and punishment, along with a freer media.

Good idea. Let’s have a look at the numbers.

In describing Taiwan, the site writes of “young virgins,” giving the ages of 12-15. So let’s set the lowest age at 12, with the oldest at 17.

As of 2000, Taiwan’s population was 22.2 million. Of that number, roughly 956,000 fell into the 12-14 age range, with another 1.12 million in the 15-17 group. That’s 2.08 million. Now let’s halve that number to get the number of girls: 1.04 million. (Sure there can be boys in the sex industry, too, but the number would be just a small fraction of the number of girls.)

The site’s figure of 100,000 would mean that one tenth of girls 12-17 in Taiwan are prostitutes. Bullshit.

The site also says that 20 percent of Taiwan’s child prostitutes are Aborigines.

Taiwan has about 414,000 Aborigines. If the Aboriginal population matches the demographics of the population as a whole, there are about 19,400 Aboriginal girls in the 12-17 age group. That’s about 20 percent of 100,000.

So, according to the site’s reckoning, virtually every Aboriginal girl is a child prostitute.

Bullshit.

Geez, where I live the hookers are all old hags that I would NOT touch even if I were desperate or had herpes or something.

Child prostitutes - not in my town, as far as I know, and I wouldn’t know that much btw.

But the hookers do often shreik “Haaaaaaaloooooo”, like they really think that I’d jump them, Yesh!

Spectacularly debunked Cranky. I do wonder where these NGOs get their figures from. I supoose they just grab UNICEF’s estimate, and double it to make the problem sound extra-serious and then call the reporterbots at the local newspapers to publicise their latest “research.” Very useful.
If you search the published reports available online for figures for child prostituton in Taiwan, you find estimates that range from about 30,000 to 100,000 (as quoted above.) I doubt any one of the local NGOs concerned did a stroke of meaningful work to accurately assess the problem.

They might have done a stroke or two to assess the situation, but that wouldn’t help with calculating the numbers.

I too think it’s bullshit. Some knowledge of Taiwan and a bit of common sense would tell you that. Last night I did a search and couldn’t find anything to back up those figures. Yoru site led to another one which mentioned a 1994 UNICEF report. I couldn’t find the repot. I did find a UNICEF document quoting 40000-60000 but without providing any evidence to back up this claim. I also doubt that UNICEF as a UN body would evn do any studies in Taiwan.

Many of the children were coerced to come to Taiwan from mainland China. Some come willingly, most are abducted. The exact figures are not known. I can only speculate why the government turns a blind eye to child abduction and forced prostitution of minors in Taiwan.
Unknown numbers of the slave, adolescent prostitutes are smuggled in from the mainland. I suspect they make up a large percentage of the 100,000 mentioned in the original report.

If this were true, I think it would be likely that at least a tiny proportion of those caught being sneaked into Taiwan would be children. However, this is not the case, as can be seen by looking no further than the high-profile news reports that ALWAYS accompany intercepted boatloads of illegal mainland immigrants. Those stories get huge coverage here. You can suspect whatever you like, but unless you can provide evidence to back your suspicions, don’t be surprised when other people dismiss you as a crank.

These words say it all! Some people will believe any old guff they read on the Internet. Now I know why the Nigerians love the advance fee fraud scam.

I think that this thread could very quickly lead back to another famous thread, “What makes a good prostitute?”. But that could promote illegal activities and we wouldn’t want that now, would we?

Why is it that threads with the word prostitute in them are guaranteed to get replies?

The world center of prostitution-type slavery used to be Bangkok (the market, not the activity). Now it’s Israel. Most of the slaves are Russian or East European.

The government of Israel doesn’t clamp down because it is corrupt and doesn’t much care (or cares because they are on the take). The governments of other countries either don’t much care either, or in the case of the U.S., don’t dare go after Israeli criminal gangs because they have powerful political backing–the same backing that makes Israel a U.S. ally, even though it has done everything that Iraq has and more.

China specializes in other forms of slavery–the “work camp” version (some actually legal there) and the “debt slavery” version. The latter category would apply to many of the illegal Chinese immigrants who are smuggled into more advanced economies. I’ve read some of their experiences in the trans-Pacific crossing. Many are raped and killed during these voyages. It’s truly horrific what we human beings have become.

Of course some people will always dismiss even the most obvious facts around them.

Legal Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation in Taiwan: A Socio-Legal Perspective
Author: Amy H. Shee

I’m not dismissing the awful fact of pedophilia and sexual slavery, or the fact that it exists in Taiwan. However, you appear to be attempting to suggest that the problem is particularly bad in Taiwan as compared with other countries, which, according to the links you provide, is simply not the case at all.

Bullshit, as Cranky so eloquently put it.

What exactly is your point?

To answer your original question of how this can happen in a developed country: It happens because there are men in every country in the world, developed or not, who are eager to pay to fuck children, and because there are other people in every country in the world, developed or not, who are willing to provide the children.

Have a look at the numbers.
If even the most conservative figures are correct, 30,000 to 40,000, according to the ROC goverment report.
globalmarch.org/worstformsre … aiwan.html
That would be equivelent to (aprox.) .18% of the total population.
To get a better perspective let’s compare it to the US. According to the latest consensus it’s population is 290,619,976. .18 percent of that population is 523,115
That would mean that if the US had a similiar problem, there would be some half million children forced into prostitution by the local organised crime syndicates in the US.

But in fact, according to the globalmarch site you linked, the problem could be far worse than that.
Child Prostitution and Pornography NATIONAL STATISTICS

 • The US Department of Justice estimates the numbers to be between 100,000 and 3 million. These figures include children involved in prostitution, child pornography and who have been trafficked into the United States. (ECPAT, CSEC Database, ecpat.net/eng/ecpat_inter/pr … /index.asp)

 • In the US alone, at least 100,000 children are believed to be involved in commercial sexual exploitation. (UNICEF, State of the World’s Children, 1997)

 • 300,000 to 600,000 juveniles are involved in prostitution in the United States. (CATW Fact Book, citing Gary Costello, Exploited Child Unit of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, “Danger for prostitutes increasing, most starting younger”, Beacon Journal, 21 September 1997)

 • There are around 100,000 child prostitutes. (US Dept of Labor, Prostitution of Children, 1996)

 • Each year between 1.2 million and 2 million teenagers hit the street, half of them will turn into prostitution to survive.(Kathlyn Gay, Child Labor: A Global Crisis, 1998, citing Joan J. Johnson, Teen Prostitution, 1992)
Seems to me from your link that child sex is far worse in the US than it is in Taiwan.
