…There, we will formally launch the Dual Nationality Taiwan campaign -an advocacy plan calling for legislative reform that allows permanent residents (APRC holders) a pathway to citizenship without having to renounce their original citizenship(s).
53 signatures so far today. We need 4,948 more over the next 60 days to get a formal government response.
@Marco is right. We need as many Taiwanese citizens to sign this as possible. Please ask your spouse, children, friends, and colleague to sign.
Let’s be realistic. The Ministry of the Interior is going to say no and repeat all of its old reasons such as national security and loyalty. That is the Ministry’s policy and the government will almost certainly defer to the Ministry.
The only way to get this done will be to have legislators amend the Nationality Act. The petition and the event tomorrow are just the beginning. Eventually, we will have to take to the streets for this one. That’s why Crossroads is so important. They are an NGO who can get the permits to do this when the time comes.
I expect this to take ten years. The advocacy groups that pushed for alternative schools need 16 years. TPP Legislator (and long-time independence supporter)
Chen Gau-Tzu has been fighting for expanded access to assisted reproduction for 25 years. She even had to join the TPP.
The petition is something that can be used later to legitimize the advocacy campaign. Let’s get it done!
Here’s the TaiwanPlus coverage. It looks like the event was a success and about 50% of the attendees looked Taiwanese. Reasonably credible. Sadly I can’t find any coverage in the Chinese-language media.
I don’t think it will be easy based on progress so far. After three days and one reasonably succesful event, there are only 416 ‘signatures’.
Everyone will really need to lean on Taiwanese family family, friends, and coworkers to sign and get the word out on their social media accounts.
Us foreigners can’t do this by ourselves. For one thing it’s not credible if only foreigners sign. For another, many foreigners don’t seem to be able to use the site
it will come in due course, they want to see how it goes on the petition platform, once we get the 5k, they will start covering it. SO we will garner more local attention
