A trip to Taiwan, through the eyes of a Redneck

I found this site amusing as I’m sure some of you will…

http://bovination.com/occidentalObservations200501/

Funny stuff, good find!

Love the guy’s summary of Buddhism:

At least he’s a deep-thinking redneck.

I thimk I smell a fake “Redneck”…
A philosophy undergraduate could come up with that after an afternoon’s drinking at the uni bar. And then have the good grace to be embarrassed about it when he sobered up.
Also…
“Taking the piss at karaoke”
and…

Sorry…this ain’t no real redneck. No real RedNeck would use these terms.

Aussie maybe?

And then there is this disgusting post…

Nope…not a redneck…just another racist.

We got rednecks too!

HG

Definitely Aussie (references all the way through), and someone who is extracting the Michael (no redneck).

I’m afraid that’s Australian humour. Don’t take it seriously.

I took this site as tongue in cheek but didn’t put much thought towards how racist this guy is.
she suddenly found her socialist roots and started babbling about ‘exploitation’. In order to keep the peace I had to avoid the maid completely for the remainder of the trip. I even had to take this photo in secret. The rest of them are on the other web site.
In fact, I think he was pointing fingers at his SO for the obvious contradiction.

Could be wrong but most of the posts were hilarious.

As an Australian I didn’t find this very funny at all and I doubt Taiwanese people would find it particularly amusing either. It really worries me what kind of disturbed, weird individual would spend so much time creating such a shite webpage as that. I didn’t think it was clever in the slightest. Everything this guy spoke about or referred to has been discussed a thousand times before on Forumosa and other Taiwanese forums. It really worries me to think that I am the only westerner on this forum that has criticised this cynical, degrading, racist crap. I can’t see how any Taiwanese could read that webpage and find its contents even mildly amusing. His continued references to Australia this and Australian that was really becoming tiresome. Light-hearted jokes about cultural idiocyncrasies can be funny if expressed in a certain way but I felt his delivery was extremely cynical and quite racist.

:notworthy: :bravo:
& that he’s full of crap… and a swillmongerer :aiyo:

Well hmmmmmmm isn’t that something…

(thousand should be replaced by a trillion)

There’s irony in there somewhere me thinks.

Eric - your shorts are too tight.
Have a XXXX and relax.

Normally I wouldn’t give advice to someone who is still in the “Adaption” stage* but I feel I should at least try to help. A healthy dose of butoconazole (Femstat), clotrimazole (Clotrimaderm, Canesten), miconazole (Monistat, Monazole, Micozole), nystatin (several brand names), tioconazole (GyneCure) or terconazole (Terazole) should cure your yeast infection.

 • Some foreigners are so heavily influenced by the local culture that in a sense they ‘go native’. This is not necessarily a good adaption. If it reaches the point whereby you thoroughly reject your native culture and disparage your home country to the point where you don’t want anything more to do with it or its people, then you are suffering from another from of culture shock. For lack of a better term, I’ll call it the ‘rejection syndrome’. It’s not a healthy sign at all. The rejection syndrome is a common ailment among wandering westerners who are drifting trough Asia ‘in search of themselves’ and who think they’ve discovered ‘true enlightenment’ by adopting eastern cult religions and rejecting all things western. Indeed, some come to believe that they now possess some exclusive wisdom that makes them superior to other westerners. To put it more simply; the suffer from an inflated ego. What these ‘enlightened’ individuals fail to see is that western culture, for all its faults, has many strong points, which is why it’s so pervasive in the world today.

This is from Robert Storey’s Lonely Planet guide to Taiwan, isn’t it? I know what you’re saying but it would have been polite to have cited the author.

Stole… God*… yes, if you search the term in quotes (and please do)… “Adaption” you will find several links, one of which is mentioned in the Taiwan Lonely Planet guide. Piaget also brings up adaption in reference to his stage theory which I assume SS based his observations of foreigners living in Taiwan. But it was Freud that brought to our attention those who suffer from anal fixation… If you wanted the names of the specific companies that manufacture the medication I would’ve provided those as well. I didn’t realize that yeast infections were so pervasive on this website.

Agreed. :notworthy:

Maybe you need to spell it out for me, the racist stuff . . . I guess I wasn’t looking for it . . . but I thought he was pretty funny . . . call me a racist, I guess :unamused:

If we reversed it with a Taiwanese tour group it might be (can anyone think of more, I’m not good at seeing it through their eyes);

Football crowds and the stupid game where they kick and throw the ball around with no apparent logic. Something like ping pong but it takes 2 teams and a big field.

Crazy people cooking their skin black on the beach in the sun all day.

Eating disgusting food like meat pies.

I’d not find it funny if I viewed their web page, just normal, but good luck to them if they want to take pictures and be amused.

Escaped From Taiwan,
I am not going to say much because I am too busy with university studies to be bothered with this thread. However, what I will say is that you must be an extremely stupid person to make such wild assumptions that I have somehow gone “native” and are still going through the so called “adaption” stage. You know nothing about me yet you pretend that you know what I stand for… I no longer live in Taiwan so I definitely haven’t gone native. I may have adapted well enough to get by in Taiwan but I certainly don’t have a special connection with the island. The only reason I still go to Taiwan occasionally is because I have a Taiwanese girlfriend. I don’t even like Taiwan that much compared with other countries I have lived including Australia, Japan and England.

I am sorry I just didn’t find that webpage very funny at all. The photos and comments on the webpage in effect denigrate Taiwanese people, their society, their culture, their habits and basically mocks the way they live their lives. Admittedly some of the things they do deserve to be criticised but I think the contents of the webpage went a tad overboard.

But wasn’t that the point? Relax…have a beer.

Dude… I recommend a double dose of tioconazole a.s.a.p. It seems that the itch has spread faster than expected imparing your sense of humor.
