Heavens me, a whole post dedicated entirely to me! Still nothing on the actual topic, though. I suppose analyzing the structural integrity of a false dilemma would entail too much actual thinking.
Oh wow, looks like Trump fanatics are feeling extra uninhibited with their lawless king in office right now. What’s the worst that could happen to them? Ah right, a presidential pardon and an attempt to make a slush fund in their honor, a-la J6’ers.
That’s clearly not accurate. Turnout was pretty impressive from what I saw. And many people like some friends of
Mine went to celebrations earlier in the week, say at a minor league baseball game. Saw a game. Drank some beer fireworks, merka! Go home.
tl;dr non-Americans are likely not informed about Americans or US affairs here, a website dedicated to expats in Taiwan (ROC), for reasons perhaps not obvious.
For many of us, non-Americans would be wise to accept that we don’t share all we (US citizens) think because we’re out in (international) public and sharing what we actually think about domestic affairs moves zero things forward and, very likely, some opinions backward.
It’s especially relevant to Taiwan, ROC.
It’s also the source of our disgust with US leaders who disparage (US) domestic affairs when they’re outside the US.
I’m not saying that we should shy away from defending American values. Not at all.
I’m saying that, for me, it’s come to the point that sharing my American opinions about American affairs, here, has often become meaningless in the face of today’s social media, including this site. On a Taiwan website there is absolutely no upside and many, even unimaginable downsides, to sharing. See recent interactions, above.
Most non-Americans have only a shallow interest in US political history, which doesn’t help. Even if they do have an interest, they (tend to) fail to take into account the other side in US domestic affairs and thereby ignore half the voting population. We Americans can’t do that and it’s uncomfortable to see in foreigners.
Anyway, it was a great 4th of July, and the semiquincentennial celebrations were terrific!
How is it relevant if she were tweaking? What context and clarity does that add? Are you trying to say that she wouldn’t be scared if she’d been tweaking (assuming that’s true)?
Who knows? I know I would have very uncomfortable had I been in the train with her flopping around like that.
Again, the clarity is that the seeing is believing meme of a scary group of white dudes terrified an innocent black woman isn’t all there is to it. It was a hmm a dog whistle meme.
People should be wary of memes, especially racially charged ones.
