Yikes, Songren North, the district that eats businesses, claims another victim.
Apparently, after more than 20 years as a Taipei landmark (there, and before that in Shida), the Old Lady of Smoove has shut her doors for the last time.
So long, Toots.
Every business in gastronomy has a shelf life. Renovate, renew, reinvent or die. And rental prices are indeed a big part of it, and the new labor laws.
Xinyi is becoming a ghost town. Landlords are getting greedy with the impending opening of that new tower. Go walk around the Breeze Center or Neo19ā¦ so many places have closed up and left.
Yes, thatās exactly it. Plus absolute shit-tacular food. 300 NT cheese and crackers plates withā¦ Ritz crackers.
What that place should be is a sampling/experience center. A place where you can gets pints of that TTL piss for 150NT, and healthy pours of Kavalan whiskey for 250 NT. None of this 300 NT for a beer nonsense. Thatās more than what youād pay in a major US or Canadian city!
Good riddance! That whole entire area didnāt deserve all the hype it got for the last 20 years. Iād much rather hang out on the opposite Western side of town, dihua street/beimen and those parts.
Things are changing in Xinyi. But they have always been changing. Itās not dying, itās changing. Places come and places go. Crowded as hell evenings and daytimes start getting fairly crowded as the weekend approaches. Itās a nightmare at dinner time, lines everywhere. Bars and pubs come and go.
