Alex Honnold To Free Climb Taipei 101 Sat 9am 24 Jan local time

I have mixed feelings about posting this because I personally feel it’s stupidly risky, but it is an event nonetheless.

It’s going to be broadcast live. I’m surprised the Taipei government is allowing this as a free climb (no safety equipment). I wonder how much wind will be a factor.

Most dangerous part is getting to 101 tower without being run over by a left turning bus at a pedestrian crossing.

Maybe a bit morbid to ask, but:

What happens if he falls down? Will they close the area around the 101 so he doesn’t accidentally smash a pedestrian…?

I can imagine better things than going there in person to watch and potentially seeing someone fall to their death

Last time I went the elevators were still working

I don’t really understand why the city government is allowing this…doesn’t seem like the kind of soft power Taiwan should be projecting right now.

Splat porn is yet more proof that we really haven’t advanced as much in the last two thousand years as we like to think we have:

Everyone loves bukkake of one shape or form.

Will be broadcast live on Netflix.

Did he die?

Is there any news or sources about schedule, connected events, etc.

What time does it start?

Sounds like he will climb the east side of building because he said the sun will come up quick on his side of building and dry out any moisture.

Found this.

Time Zone Date Time

I don’t think he’s very likely to die, but my problem with this is that it will otherwise be pretty boring.

The whole thing is also pretty un-Honnold. He’s not particularly known for climbing buildings, and in Free Solo he bailed from his first attempt on El Cap because all the cameras threw him out of his zone and he didn’t feel right. When he eventually went for it, it was unannounced and they had to scramble to get footage after they realized he was up there.

So all the promotion and fanfare around this makes me think he just needs some money. Which is fine, more power to him, great guy. But not a very interesting event.

He said on CNN that there are balconies all along the way and that he probably won’t die if he falls because he will hit a balcony first.
