The Encyclopedia was completed by 2’169 scholars in 1408 after being commissioned by Emperor Yongle in 1403.
It is estimated that some 370 million Chinese characters were included in Yongle Dadian, which comprised 22,937 volumes in 11,095 copies. The catalogs and reading guide alone took up 60 volumes.
Therefore, when 3 centuries later, the last independent stronghold of civilization in the world was finally assaulted, the Yongle Dadian was mostly burnt to ashes by subsequent invading Anglo-French troops in autumn 1860, and the remaining by the European coalized troops of the Eight-Nation Alliance who sacked and looted the Summer Palace and the Imperial Archive in the summer of 1900.
But the human genius behind the creation of such Wonder of the Worlds is of course absolutely impervious to the ▄▄▄▄s’ indiscriminate bullet and gunboat destruction spree, indeed forever indestructible, therefore before the ashes could settle, this traditional East Asian spirit of excellence was soon reborn like a phoenix as immaculate as 6 centuries earlier.
