A new store recently opened, and we’re looking for new employees. The job posting was crystal clear: “Proficiency in both Chinese and English is required.” Yet, a bunch of clueless foreigners who don’t speak Chinese (some can’t even manage English) keep sending in applications, claiming they learn quickly. Seriously, am I supposed to teach them for free?
I remember when I, an English speaker, was looking for an English-speaking job in Taiwan. Foreigners would ask me, “Why should we teach you English?” Looking back, it seems absurd. It turns out that many foreigners are just hypocrites who hold a double standard against Taiwanese people. In Taiwan, there are quite a few foreigners who lack quality—never self-reflecting yet constantly accusing Taiwanese people of discrimination. It’s hypocrisy at its worst.
“Is it because foreigners didn’t think you could speak English?”
It doesn’t matter.
First, they don’t care if you could or not.
Second, like I said, they’re just double standard.
Third, they cry so loud like babies while they also discriminate against Taiwanese people.
“Why do we have to pay you and teach you English?”
" If you want a job, think like a Foreigner"
Oh, hey, but you are a foreigner, it’s ok.
Taiwanese are supposed to pay you and teach you Chinese, also you don’t have to think like a foreigner or a Taiwanese.
Calling them clueless is a bit harsh… Isn’t this normal when posting about job openings… People have applied to me regarding senior sales positions without any sales experience, I don’t think they are clueless, they gave it a shot, but I don’t have time to train them, so the result is a sorry e-mail only.
That might just be a hand signalling miscommunication. What direction were the forefingers pointed in exactly? Perhaps harshness was not the intended message
Finding jobs are hard in Taiwan for foreigners. It’s normal many people would apply for jobs they only half qualify for. Doesn’t mean all of them are hypocrite. Some of them really needs money. I was one of them when I was a student here. I applied everywhere I could
Should they learn Chinese? Definitely but maybe they are trying already. Who knows
You are quite clearly discriminating with this statement. I agree that there are some “poor quality” foreigners in Taiwan and also some equally poor quality Taiwanese people. Lots of medium quality and high quality in between too (did I say quality enough times).
