As this article summarizes, Taiwan needs to take its Jen military reforms more seriously if it expects the U.S. to defend it.

I didn’t see anything about Taiwan’s preparations or changes in military preparedness. Just seems to be a US war enthusiast giving Taiwan shit for not running around with its head cut off.

At any rate, this is a reality that the United States faces in Taiwan. Americans, too, must not flinch and think that things are other than they are. Despite what many diplomats, politicians, and pundits say, the U.S. would not fight for Taiwan because it is a democracy. Taiwan would probably be worth defending even if Chiang Kai-shek were still ruling it with a bloody fist. Whether the island sometimes seems ungrateful for American largesse, or is even suspicious that the U.S. will drag it into a conflict it does not want, makes no difference.

Sure and it’s also easy to point fingers and demonize others while ignoring the facts.

Totally. Isnt it annoying when people ignore reality and enable others to cause unnecessary suffering? Makes one question those folks’ motives.

Glad you agree

Agreed, there needs to be more seriousness and awareness - but I also think the entire western world is going to defend Taiwan regardless. Even now, half the world’s navies are parked around Taiwan and the Indo Pacific, with many planned on sticking around for years before returning, plus god knows how many submarines, drones (air and underwater), etc.

There was major action happening at the start of Covid because it’s pretty clear China committed several Acts of War in close sequence.

Defending Taiwan = Defending Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, etc.

The Tanner Greer piece he referenced is better

Taiwan really needs to take its military seriously and also the threat of war seriously and everyone knows that. Many top politicians avoid military service through suspicious exemptions, which is ridiculous in a country that could be the hotspot for WW3

With the whole world gearing up for possible war In the straits, Taiwan needs to do its best impression of Israel and fast. No more four months of cutting grass in Kinmen for military service

It’s ridiculous for Taiwanese politicians to expect American mothers risk losing their sons because they don’t want to make the reforms that everyone knows needed

Absolutely. The world really needs to wake up. Especially here! We really need to take ourselves more serious and gain as much help and friendships as possible. No one helps someone that isnt willing to help themself.

Taiwan should be doing what Poland’s now doing and ordering everything going. Since Putin invaded Ukraine, they’ve ordered 1,000 K2 tanks, over 300 Abrams, 600, K9 artillery pieces, nearly 300 K239 rocket launchers, over 200 HIMARS…

They’ve basically said to Russia, invade and we’re gonna kick your ass.

Taiwan has ordered Abrams–but really, needs more.

This is certainly just a speculative guess, but Taiwan is already ordering a lot! Should it do more? Yes, obviously. but this administration has done more than any of the past few by leagues. To be fair, it is hard following a devout extremist administration of human rights (Chen, taiwan independence ) followed by a devout we belong to china administration (Ma, selling the country out to china). So it’s a fickle situation, to say the least. And this Iassume is what above posts mean by Taiwan needs to be clear. But the catch 22 of declaring independence is still very real, that sparks war. Thus, a fucked up situation.

However, let’s not forget that for years Taiwan wasnt given “the opportunity” to purchase insanely expensive weapons to defend against an expanding and more unethical China because of fucking pork imports. On that front, the US holds nearly all the blame and this point should be talked about more. At the same time, Tsai’s office has said maybe pork hormone levels arent worth not having self defense capabilities and military ties with one of the few countries that might actually be able to help us militarily against what is shaping up to be the new Nazis of wwe. Especially given taiwan uses the exact same hormones all the time, they just have a barely enforced rule that makes the health folks think the FDA here cares. Fine the offending feed producers and let them keep producing. L oh L ?

Politics is mind bogglingly fucking retarded at nearly every level. this stuff is so simple if “we” step back from “our” corruption.
the quotations meaning any “we” and any “our”. most countries are equally as fucking moronic.

Edit to add. Taiwan shouldnt be doing what Poland is doing, buying some foreign shit. Taiwan should be doing.what it is actually famous for, and a world class leader in: Copying other people and setting.fucking wicked production lines to pump that stuff out as fast as possible. I realise we have some in house weaponry. But god damn if we shouldnt be forefront on the weapons tech front. on this point I think Taiwan is very well setup to be like a Lockheed type company but on a country level. Imagine a weaponized TSMC. That goes against my core of peace, but when nazis come a calling and the world more or less pretends you dont exist, you gotta defend yourself. Then back to internal conflicts and stability. the problem is we have numerous CCP trolls I. our government. See the recent election. See my avatar. it is alarming.

An investment in improving quality of training, tactics, and organizational reform are far more necessary than simply purchasing weapons systems

So Xi Jinping’s new agreement with the Arab States seems to have acknowledged their claim for Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa – three islands in the Strait of Hormuz.

These islands have been occupied by Iran since 1971, but the UAE maintains their claim over the islands, and has the support of all Arab States.

Tehran expressed ‘strong dissatisfaction’, and some in the government threatened to recognize Taiwan.

The announcement by pastry chain Chia Te Bakery on Monday (Dec. 12) that it would halt exports to China touched off a Google star review war with Chinese users lowering its rating to one star and over 1,000 Taiwanese netizens giving five-star reviews to revitalize its rating.

On Monday, Chia Te Bakery announced it would not provide supplementary documentation to maintain its import registration in China because of requirements by Beijing that it provide proprietary information such as the recipe for its famous pineapple cakes. In the Facebook announcement, the bakery wrote that in order to ensure stable and good quality, it will focus on local operations in Taiwan, and “whether we export or not, it will not affect the direction of our store’s business.”
