Be careful along the Fangshan-Fenglin (枋山 楓林) stretch: wind is brutal.

Same here, the wind was the strongest for me from Pingdong to Taidong. I had to slow down and really concentrate on driving in a straight line.

Where did you stay? Hotels or campsites?

My days of staying in backpacker bunk beds and sharing a bathroom are over so I stayed in a minsu whenever possible, otherwise a hotel.

I thought I might have trouble finding lodging during CNY, especially since I didn’t book anything in advance, but I had no problems. I would decide in the afternoon what city I wanted to stop in for the night, then check out booking.com and find a place.

The places I stayed in all had private bathrooms and ranged in price from $700 to $2,100, with the average being $1,400.

Sounds great ! I also like a private room too. I have only shared bathrooms in EU and Japan not Taiwan.
