Awesome Food in Taipei?

I don’t think you can call @ranlee a stupid asshole, man.

Awesome food in Taipei… awesome food in Taipei… let me think…

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I guess some people just hate hot pot? I always thought it was ok, depending in the sauces. Never really got into the goose/duck stuff in the winter though, too gamey tasting.

I got the holidays booked, and if everything goes according to plan, we should be in Taiwan for the first week or so of March 2019 ( after time in Malaysia and Singapore). We are thinking 3/4 days in Taipei and area ( we have some friends to visit), and then to Hualien/Taroko for 2-3 days.

Any recommendations for best curry Donkatsu in Taipei?

Are you not familiar with all the late night establishments in that area? Girls got to eat after work.

This place near Linsen Bei has awesome Sichuan food. The boss is from Chongqing https://maverick007.pixnet.net/blog/post/41500366-☆-金海洋重慶特色菜

Thanks. I will have a look at that one as well.

Is no one a fan of the Japanese Pork Cutlet “Donkatsu” with Japanese curry? I would love to find a good place for both the curry and the cutlet if possible.

And then I am trying to remember good night market treats- so far I have the black pepper buns, roast squid, the shuijianbao, hmmm -I’m really just trying to think of the things I liked back in the day… Any help?

Donkatsu is one of my favorite post ride meals. Check these. Both are good and both have unlimited rice and salad.

Like Ranlee, I am also a fan! My go-to place in Taipei (and even in places like Taoyuan and elsewhere) is the “Saboten” chain, which began in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district and happily serves its tasty fare (including katsu karee) at its various branches in Taiwan. Probably the best is the branch located near Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall MRT (the shop is just off Guangfu Road).

Enjoy!

To be honest, there’s nothing wrong with Coco, sometimes a bit pricey, but I still like going to tonkatsu specialty restaurants for my fix.

I think Saboten is far more careful with their frying than Coco, which at times seems to cook the sh*t out of their cutlets (well, at least the branch in Gongguan does). Saboten’s price point is a bit higher than Coco’s, but with all the stuff they give you–curry, cutlet, rice, cabbage, miso soup, tea, unlimited side dishes–it’s far from unreasonable. Just thinking about their curry dishes makes me hungry!

Saboten sucks.

So where to go for delicious curry and pork cutlet in Taipei? Is it just a hate on for Sabuten, or curry cutlet in general?

To be clear, it’s “Saboten.” And despite our cranky resident raccoon’s position, it’s actually pretty good. Raccoon: it may be time for your nap!

Enjoy!

I get my curry tonkatsu here

They also do an amazing fried fish, original sauce or curry, and same with shrimp. 100 NTD. Ask for their potato salad.

I am more into Japanese food. My favorite places:

This one has business lunch for 149 NTD. Among the side dishes, I prefer their aubergine and also the fried fish.

This one is a hidden gem. I luv their sashimi. And miso soup. Old school like the old school.

Interesting. I am going to check that out. Just down the road from that there is a rice noodles place, its good. very new not even on google maps yet. next to this kindergarten. https://goo.gl/maps/x5E5S2DdCCS2

That one is quite new. I find the menu a bit puzzling. They are doing something different there.

I asked the waiters and they said its the owners home style cooking. The one with the spicy warning signs on it is good. Some of the side dishes too.

@Rocket AKA, trash panda, has taste for shit. It’s to be expected.

You, yeah, you, there are people on here who eat fucking cilantro voluntarily and you say I got taste for shit (sic)???

Yeah, I like me some tonkatsu just fine, although I’m not too crazy about the “curry” gravy, it often seems grainy and artificial.
We got a crapload of little hole-in-the-wall Nipponeser joints near my place, they’re all real good. My favourite one makes a tonker that they Cordon Bleu, with ham and cheese in the middle, it’s fuckin awesome.

But Saboten sucks.
