The people I was referring to live in the upscale bit of Portland, although they did take me to meet some lesbians. I don’t know why it was temped. Ask the moderators of the forum it was temped from. I bet if you’re not a dick about it (I’m going to keep reposting this until I get banned! So there!), you’ll probably get a satisfactory explanation, and maybe even a clue as to how to keep from being temped the next time.

It’s not good to post ‘helpful’ information on forumosa - people don’t say ‘thank you’ and half the time you get shat on by meanies. Just use it to network … Every time you get modded, don’t answer 10 Qs you would have normally answered in TEIT. For sure, no-one else will bother.

I thought I should ask in public because it would save the mod in question having to explain this again and again. If people know that ‘retard’ is an insult, which is only hearsay at the moment as I don’t have an official answer, then they can safely avoid using the word.
On the other hand, google says that the word has been used about 1800 times on this forum.
I guess I’m asking about consistency of moderating, or the lack thereof.
To be honest though, I think that certain mods are guilty of imposing their own standards without consideration for what the majority of posters find acceptable. If the problem is the use of the word retard then several posts here need to be temped, and many others all over the forum likewise. I don’t have a problem with anyone calling me a retard in the context of a friendly chat, or a bastard, a wanker, or any of the other names that it’s normal to call your friends in many English-speaking cultures.
I know that some people don’t like it, but some people don’t like any form of bad language, others don’t like it if I don’t accept their version of religious orthodoxy, some apparently cannot accept that I dress differently than them or have more hair. Well, they’re free to have their opinions and free to air them. But are they free to impose their standards on everyone else?
Policing should reflect the accepted values of a community, not try and reshape the community in the hope of attracting more people of ‘the right’ type.
As someone pointed out recently, most web-users worldwide are passive. That’s not going to change if you silence the people who create most of the useful content here. It just results in less content.
I sent a PM recently to the administrators of this site asking about plotting the posts (or words) per user over time. I bet the ratio hasn’t changed as the site has grown, or if it has the trend has been downwards. ie a smaller percentage of posters are contributing the bulk of the content than five or ten years ago.

He is, you know. I have examples that would make your eyes water. But you are a dick with viewpoints and information. You join in. Most don’t; they join forumosa for no other reason than to ask questions, and don’t give help or even thanks in return.
I’ve got a bee in my bonnet about this right now. Recently, I have answered SIX PMs with requests for help, and not one responded with a single ‘thank you’. For slightly different reasons, I don’t really stick my neck out on the main boards to help in TEIT, or wherever, because it just sets me up as a target.

Just to clarify, among native speaking English speakers, the word ‘retard’ has two ‘or more!’ meanings. It comes from the French from ‘late’, I believe, and was used to describe people with slow mental development: this has taken on derogatory meaning. It’s also used frequently in common parlance as a low-level insult, with less ‘offense’ than similar terms such as ‘idiot’, or ‘moron’, also in common use. It’s not acceptable to call a differently abled child, for example, a ‘retard’, but it’s fine for friends, especially males, to use terms such as ‘idiot’ or ‘retard’, and is slightly less acceptable to use ‘moron’.

Well, self-awareness is a good thing, but being a dick isn’t. As I’ve said before, if you temper your words, and post with consideration, you (and the mods) won’t feel you have to delete (or temp) your posts, and people won’t think you’re a dick.

The amount of banter between regulars is what keeps this place entertaining. We wouldn’t have classic threads like Penguinism if it wasn’t based on 2 like-minded souls giving each other shit.
I don’t disagree with you. Moderating isn’t an exact science, so each moderator is going to strike their own balance. And if they’re all so easy to talk to (and they are), then why be a prick about it? Small concessions should be easy to make. It’s really not a big deal.
I have around 45 unanswered PMs for that very reason. I’ve long since given up on responding to PMs – in fact, I don’t even bother opening them – unless they’re from trusted sources. Most flobbers don’t qualify.
Yep, I also had a couple of porny ones with a fairly uncomfortable level of detail from people who (se wives) should know better, and some misogynistic stuff that was too extreme for the boards. I just delete 'em if they’re not from pals. I do get curious if they’re from someone new, though, and I do get a fair few lovely ones.
Asking for business phone numbers, views on silly business ideas, personalised teaching help, etc, is not really good, unless they understand that networking is supposed to be mutually beneficial, rather than just a drain on someone’s goodwill.
Anyway, we’re off topic. The question is: is Loretta a dick? The answer is, of course, a resounding ‘Yes’, but that doesn’t mean that he’s wrong.
His unerring wrongness has nothing to do with the fact that he’s undoubtedly a dick.
