Beer. The dividing line

I think beer is great and can get drunk on it with maximum pleasure. Others say beer is a girls drink and hard liquor is the only route to take. I love beer and scorn those who scorn beer.

Who here is a beer lover?

Who here is a beer scorner?

Don’t care for beer anymore. THe yeast gives my sinuses problems. Plus I think that certain hard liquors are more worthy. But it’s all a personal choice.

Off beer altogether these days, strictly a Chardonnay socialist and non-too-occasional Mojito fan.

   GIVE ME BEER!

I think too much beer makes people dumb and agressive…

Look at all the dumb and agressive people in beer-drinking nations like England and Germany

In southern Europe where people prefer wine, people are more relaxed and enjoying their lifes more

Oh yeah, what moronic stereotypes… but there is a bit of truth in them…

“Beer is for breakfast, young Flanagan”

I like beer. I don’t mind the occasional gin and tonic or vodka martini, but in my opinion, a man whose piss up routine consists only of those sorts of drinks is a nancyboy. I don’t really care for scotch or cogniac; I don’t find these refreshing at all. The missus is a beer drinker, too, so I guess I married well.

To me, after living in Asia for so long, the real line to be drawn among beer drinkers is how it’s drunk. I find that if a man drinks his lager warm, then he likely has serious character flaws and is not someone with whom I’d like to associate, much less down a few. Likewise for the people who put ice cubes in their beer, or people who drink their beer from anything smaller than a half-pint glass (and to be honest, I strongly believe that only women and small children should be allowed to drink from half-pint glasses anyway, but even then should still be encouraged to drink from a proper sized glass; I’m only tolerant of the half-pint glass in an effort to be ecumenical). And I have little patience for people who insist on playing loud, fist waiving drinking games that require one to drink a half-half-pint glass of beer whenever one loses the game, as if this proves manliness. These people really fuck up my groove, and their quick gulping only leads to smelly burping-not at all like the pleasant, mildly beer flavored burps of mine that the missus so loves. No, I won’t be ready to accept the Chinese as a fully civilized people until they learn to drink their beer at proper temperature without ice cubes from a proper glass and without a bunch of silly hootin’ and hollerin’. No sir.

Take that back or I’ll bust a pint glass over your head.

I love beer but as I get older it seems to like me less. many of my friends have switched to G&Ts (yuk) or Vodka sodas (boring). So the beer f*** my body up more and more but I resist the change to these boring drinks because I just can’t judge how much I have drunk on spirits. I enjoy the odd glass of Scotch, or a nice red wine but not when I am out with the guys. Does anyone have a solution? Should I just stick with beer, enjoy myself and suffer for 2 days afterwards?

Good point. And I’d add for emphasis the cacophany kicked up by a roomfull of agitated Cantonese slamming cups of dice. Uuuurrrghh!

Strangely, ice and beer is a habit I’ve fallen into in Thailand. I think it might stop me dehydrating while also keeping the beer especially chilled.

It’s all good. (Except the crap stuff. It sucks.)

I always knew there was something about you I didn’t like.

I don’t see things as an “either/or” choice. Beer and harder options are both good, and each has its place. If I’ve been drinking beer to the point of saturation and no longer get a buzz from it, I cut back and switch to wine, vodka or G&Ts. Harder stuff is also good for outdoor trips as it’s lighter and doesn’t require refrigeration. But in this bloody heat it’s hard to beat a cold lager.

If you are looking to drink beer, but want to cut down on the volume while getting more of a punch, then go for one of the strong Belgian beers (which are often about 8-9%).

I jokingly asked my doctor for advice about the same problem, and he suggested daily exercise would do the trick. No shit. I find that if I’ve done some aerobic exercise two or three times a week, I can put the beer down like water and still be in on time and bright eyed for work the next day, so long as I only do that no more than once or twice a week. Of course I’d be a lot healthier if I skipped the beer and just did the exercise, but what would be the point of the exercise then?

And now a question on behalf of the wife: Will it be OK for her to consume alcohol if she breastfeeds our baby? I’ve heard a variety of answers:
Every Chinese person who’s expressed an opinion thought I was nuts for even asking the question. “Of course she can’t have alcohol when she’s breastfeeding!”
I’ve read that it’s ok just as long as she waits for the alcohol to be excreted from her system before feeding the baby. I’ve also heard that she should “pump and dump” before feeding the baby if she’s had any alcohol, but some people seem to think this is unnecessary. Any opinions? After nine months, the wife will be ready for a drink.

I like beer.
Always have. I remember the 1st taste of beer I had. I liked it.

In the hot weather of summer here I also like a nice cold bottle of Chilean Chardonnay. Sometimes my lunch is some french bread with herbed and peppered olive oil and a glass or two of cold white wine.

But I always come back to beer.

I drink less and less as I age.
But I like a good beer as much as ever.

“fallen” is the right word. A weakness of character and a disposition for degeneracy, he was easy prey for the backstreet lures of the East, and descended into a life of whoring with native women and came to call the mean opium dens his home. He became a cautionary tale of what happens when white men fall to the darkest depths of Oriental depravity

I had you labelled an apostate until I read…

Whew…

Superb! And um, guilty as charged!
