Preview started yesterday with my posts. See the chops down below? Still playing with this. My goal is to recognize Forumosans who have contributed to the website - a small way of saying “thank you, you’ve made a difference to us”.
And yes, you’re getting one (or more) whether you like it or not. The nice thing about this version is that we can explain why you have that chop. You can look at my profile for to see how it is presented there
Guanxi is a heck of a lot more complicated to install. It wasn’t really removed as much as it wasn’t brought back after the Server Move at that time. I recall that the Olympus version of this software seemed to be “coming soon” so I chose to wait for Olympus to stablize before bringing back a time-consuming mod like Guanxi. Years passed and guanxi wasn’t missed, and every time the spirit moves me, I’d check to see the status of Olympus first. Today, incredibly, Olympus seems more tangible (its the main platform at phpBB.com now). So let’s wait a bit longer before we seriously reconsider it
Now, if we could make Guanxi as valuable and interchangeable as, say, Q Coins, then we might bring it back sooner

“Crab” is pronounced the same as “Thank you” - but I don’t want to use 2 Crabs (“I have the crab” doesn’t sound as bad)

There actually isn’t a limit to categories. But my purpose in installing this was specifically to thank the many cool people who help us out.
If you have suggestions, they are welcome. But bear in mind, it’s not difficult for the admins to use the system to acknowledge people who have given us a hand. It’s quite natural, imho. But it’s something else if we (or anyone else) were to be expected to do more than this. The Classic Posts effort is an example - we have a process in place to identify great posts here, but it’s not surprising that it has become a chore to run thru all the steps everytime for all time.
I don’t mean to discourage you. Just that if we add a new chop there, please think about who is supposed to assign in. And if it isn’t going to be an Admin (and we are already pretty loaded down), then how can we ensure that the effort will last. btw, this system permits us to assign a Chop Moderator.
And btw, this modification was originally written by someone from Taiwan 
I was thinking more of the tourist information symbol. I googled to find you one, and all the references were in the UK. Have I really wandered around the world hallucinating these signs everywhere else or has the UK achieved internet dominance? Anyway, the ‘i’ on the end of this one could be a good way to signify that someone is especially helpful or friendly.
It’s prolly not the right symbol for someone who goes out of their way to help newbies, although I think one is a good idea.
I guess the amount of work involved with awarding chops depends on how many you expect to give out. Do you want them to be like boy scout badges or Victoria Crosses? Will there be ‘negative chops’? Would posters have to accept the chops awarded?
I imagine that once chops start appearing everyone will want one. And everyone will have ideas about what will be worthy of recognition and who should get one and what the procedure should be. Some kind of fixed qualifications to get one, a democratic procedure, or a totally arbitrary system allegedly backed up by rules nobody ever reads unless they’re arguing?
Can you empower different mods to award different chops for their forums? Allow lupillus to give out the ‘certified female’ chop and I’ll take care of the studmuffins, as long as we’re allowed to trade jobs occasionally.
And if it becomes a specialised job, I’m not sure that ‘chop moderator’ is a good title. How about ‘chop monitor’ or ‘head girl/boy’? (The last would be for sexually confused people.)
Ideas for chops:
- language police badge
- official illuminator, for those who make banners, avatars, etc
- friends of the clueless, for helping newbies
- Justice of the Peace, for particularly conciliatory people who calm down others’ squabbles
- Fool/Jester/Village Idiot
- Taiwaneaser, for contributors

Surely you remember what a mess this place used to be? Tall buildings, billion dollar bank accounts, multi-hued usernames, all kind of fancy widgits, and that awful gold medallion that Sandman used to wear at happy hours! Sadly the plebs love this stuff. Just look at the Reclining Buttercup’s response.
I agree with you that a ‘no bells and whistles’ policy is easier, just as I already told Gus that the page is too cluttered. His response was the quote I opened this thread with and I know for a fact that Gus likes bells and whistles.
I’m trying to open his mind to what a huge mess of work he’s taking on, not to mention the controversy he’s courting. The next step is to remind him that he eventually did away with all that guff. But it won’t do any good. He’ll probably find you a stick in the mud chop too, just because he thinks it’s funny.
