Best High-end Japanese Restaurant in Taipei?

Have tried the following:

  1. Mitsui
  2. Shan Hua
  3. Suntory (Far Eastern Plaza)
  4. B3 New Japanese restaurant in Grand Formosa Regent
  5. Sherwood Japanese B1
  6. Ichi
  7. Dozo
  8. 33 Jian Tang
  9. Xiao Dong Ting
  10. Peony
  11. Grand Hyatt Iridori (buffet)
  12. Shintori

What, if anything, am I missing? I don’t want any cheap bowl of rice venues or shabu shabus. I want top end, best of the best Japanese. Anyone?

Fred

No idea. Which of those has been the best so far?

Ton Sushi in the Neo 19?

How much does it have to be per person to be considered high-end? Or is there another criteria?

My favorite Japanese place in Taipei at the moment is the Katsu joint on AnHe just off the corner of Jen-Ai (hey, it’s in a high-end neighborhood ). There is a Japanese bakery attached to it. It was originally just behind Cathay Hospital, but they moved there when they renovated the original spot (so by now, I think there are 2 places and they are within 2 blocks of each other).

I wouldn’t normally think of a pork chop place as “high end”, but they do it very well and the variety of breaded pork is great. I’m getting hungry just remembering it

Let’s go with NT$2,000 and above per person. I want high end not breaded pork chops. Sorry Goose Egg! haha

A definite high-end place is the Japanese place inside Taipei City Club (B1, #156 Minsheng E Road, Sec. 3).

When you walk down the large stairway to the basement level, make a U-turn on your left and walk as far as you can (bearing right). When you reach the dead end, there will be the Taipei City Club’s meeting rooms to your left and the hanging cloth covering a door way to the Japanese food. Walk through the cloth covering and you’ll be asked to select a private room.

I used to work in an office upstairs in the building (the Tony Roma’s building) and when we wanted to take out guests from overseas who top management liked, we’d bring them there. Can’t remember prices, but who ever was the most senior person in our group would expense it

There is a pretty good teppanyaki place called 三太 at Xinyi Road, Sec. 4, 2F, No. 9 Lane 450. That place has been there for 7 years.

Its a bit difficult to find, but I think that is back where the old Tavern used to be… The place is in Lane 450 between Xinyi Road and at Jilong Rd.

They have set meals and my wife and I recently ate there. I asked for extra peices of sliced sirloin in which various things were wrapped (fish eggs and pates, etc…) and my wife had the seafood selection… our bill came to NT$ 5,500 plus… we didn’t have any wine, but they have a nice, even if small, selection. Of course they also have a selection of sakes and some Japanese beers… I think Kirin…

The best high-end Sushi /Sashimi eating place (10 pax max) was situated on Xinyi near the Junior high school.
The guy was a “master” from Kyoto, teaching some locals the Art of sushi. he was AMAZING and the squid even melted on your mouth. Shrimps were peeled “alive” in front of you and squid tentakles were still trying to got stuck in your throath if not chewed long enough.
He was extremely picky on the rice he served, throwing away quantities which were too sticky, too soft, too cold etc…

We paid 3000 + per person, but the selection was a never to forget experience. Since then , i was always disapointed in whatever other Japanse high-end restaurant.

The restaurant moved to the surroundings of Linsen road, but it is mere a shadow of what it was since the guy left for Japan again.

Masa is very good. They are on Civic Blvd. just past Tun Hua heading east on the north side of the road. Mostly sushi though. However, it is only about $1,500-2,000 without drinks. If you want to blow big bucks you will have to go to the real Japanese restaurants on Linsen.

Haven’t been there for a while but I liked ikki the two times I went there. They are at B1, #207 Dunhua North Road in Taipei (northeast corner of Minsheng and Dunhua), downstairs from where ‘Au Bon Pain’ used to be.

and if you ever go to Taichung, try MOKUBOKU,you’ll be blown away

Fred! there is this place called 山崎 (yamazaki) i’ve been there once and the food was on point! Its by the gloria prince hotel in taipei and it caters to a purely Japanese crowd thats why it isn’t as popular with the locals the chef, and owners are all from Japan I believe and last time I was there I would say 90% of the clientelle were Japanese. The only problem is I don’t know if its english friendly, but I went with a few family friends and I think it was between $2000~$3000 Per person for a tasting menu…its for surely worth a try and its japanese done right, fresh, delicate beautifully crafted food heres a link but its in chinese blog.yam.com/vito/article/2256976

You’ve mentioned this place before. I’m going to the Chungle this weekend. Can you give me the address? I’ve a mind to blow a wad on some good food.

Well, that petered out.

My vote is for Shan Hua (No. 1) and Mitsui (Taipei/Civic Blvd. No.2) and Shintori (An He Rd. Sec. 2 at No. 3)

You have got to be kidding me. You picked the Shintori on An He above the Shintori “Black” in Nei Hu.
The rest are just “wannabe” Japanese.

Sorry, you just lost all credibility.

Someone has not been to Shan Hua, has he?

There’s a place on Jiankang Road. Koo family owned. Don’t have the name card with me. It’s so private that you could easily miss the building and the door. The other is near Fuxing N. Rd and Minsheng E. Rd. It’s known as a place where dirty deals get down  but the food is great.

These two are the best so far I’ve had. Ikki is pretty good too…

Yellow, is this the one that’s btwn Ta You Road and San Min Road, right next to the Song Shan Community College?

Have you been there? I’ve been interested in that place for three years but I always see black cars with drivers in black waiting outside and you can’t even see the door to the place. No lights, no windows.

having the local mafia at a restaurant is almost always a sure sign of it being a great place to eat at.
