OK, you have this NT$1000 slab of costco ribeye in your kitchen.
How do you make it a good steak?
Well now!
Let it come up to room temperature.
Sprinkle on some sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Rub on a bit of olive oil.
Heat your skillet to way hot.
Seal the steak on all sides.
Reduce heat and allow the steak to cook to the desired level.
Put it on a plate to rest, while you…
Fry up a mess of onions, garlic and mushrooms.
Mash the potatoes that have been simmering until now, with butter, garlic fried in olive oil, salt, pepper and a bit of sharp cheddar.
Serve with a nice New World cab.
The best deal I personally have found so far is the 24 oz porterhouse at the Longhorn in Baisawan. It’s a nice tasting piece of beef, and grilled with skill. The price is 980NT.
I’m sorry that you refuse to listen to reason. You sound like one of those 9-11, flat earthers :loco: who can’t believe that you could get double the cow for half the coin.
I recommend you make reservations a day in advance, or at the least in the morning of the day you want to dine, as it gets pretty crowded. It’s within walking distance of Baisawan beach, so it’s a nice post-relaxing day out munch fest.

This statement is thoroughly confusing, understandible because of Mad Cow disease but confusing anyway:Our Hamburgers are made from only USDA Prime Sirloin Steak that is ground by our chef in our kitchen. We do not use any ground beef from the USA. All our USDA beef is boneless.
I’m afraid that any steak for less than $300 is likely just to be terrible! I say that, because I’m blessed by a truly amazing restaurant that is not a stone’s throw from my own place.
The owners (no English but English menu!) make the finest steak that I have ever had in Taipei. Ever. While the price isn’t cheap, it should certainly meet your $1000 a budget, and you’ll have almost enough money for a taxi home! But after you eat the steak there, you will be hard pressed to even look at a piece of meat the same way. I cannot eat cheap steak any more. It tastes too much like cardboard.
But, it’s in Tamsui… near the Mackay Hospital, and you just turn up. In fact, it’s right opposite this place: but they are not on Google Maps … because they are so good! They don’t need to be. It’s about the fifth shop down on the right after you turn into the lane!
If you read Chinese even a little, you’ll see the characters for steak. They are open most days, but I think they are closed on Wednesdays! And if you go there, mention my name “Ken LaoShr”! She should remember me! Tell her I sent you!
Home made soup for starter served with a Taiwanese bread -nothing weird; Mixed Fruit Salad with home made dressing; Your steak served with a vegetable or two, nicely presented; and a cup of coffee, too! Soup, salad and coffee are included, but there’s no choice for those, really. No desserts, but after that steak, I can’t see why you’d want one!
This breaks the limits set by the title but it was one of the best steaks I’ve had in Taiwan. For NT1500 you can get a 32oz. steak at the Waterfront in HsinDian (along the river next to the rope bridge). It was fantastic and fed me and the two kids. No spaghetti and no nasty, cheap egg in sight. And NO sauce if you ask for it. The set came with soup, salad, and a small desert. Will definitely be going back there.

All steaks are not created equal. The extra large cuts are top sirloin judging from the picture, which is generally tougher and more gristly than say, a filet. Plus, the thread title says “best steak,” not “biggest steak.” That being said, I prefer Carnegie’s for their sub 1K steaks. They have char broiled, USDA Choice grade ribeye or USDA Prime grade strip streak (New York steak), both for under $1000. I’ve had both and both are delicious. I actually prefer the less expensive rib eye. The Tonghua night market ones mentioned earlier for around $200 are also a great, cheap fix, and are much tastier than the price would lead you to believe.
Both Longhorn and Frank’s (down the road from Longhorn) have huge steaks for cheap, but they are indeed a quite tough and gristly to my taste. I still think Outback is better for the price. They have a few under 1000, but it’s nothing amazing. Le Jardin (French restaurant) in Tianmu has a Beef Tenderloin that might be my favorite steak, though it’s $1100 a la carte: facebook.com/LeJardinTM
Lot of fanfare and drama in both places for some seriously overrated pickings. I remember driving all the way up to Baishawan (no mean feat from my place) and couldn’t cut my tasteless steak with a chainsaw.

Yeah, never order the big sirloins. Go for filet, ribeye or porterhouse at the Long Horn. They are all good! :lick:
