AWOL, no probs apparantly with dopod 818 and the missing sync. markspace.com/products.html Very interested now.
Those (like me) looking to get into Smartphones might want to hold off for a few months.
I just had an interesting chat with a PDA store owner. As many of you know, Windows Mobile 2005 is on the cusp of worldwide release. And, 3G has just hit Taiwan.
The total convergence we’ve been waiting for is almost here.
There are new Smarphone/PPC (I think the line is about to be wiped out) models coming out in a few months which will run the new WIndows Mobile OS and will be 3G equipped. Plus they should have cameras, and possibly Bluetooth.
Numerous models should be available, not just Dopods. These will have large screens that allow you to use the full functionality of a PPC but won’t be too bulky to use as a cell.
In the meantime, I’ve been needing a PPC, so I picked up a fairly cheap Acer N30 - 6,400 NT. It’s running WIndows Mobile 2003 (first edition) so isn’t too fancy. But it’s working fine and will do fine until next year when I (hopefully) toss it and my SOny cellphone and replace them with a 3G PPC Smartphone.
Looks like exciting times are on the way.

I’m thinking about the same. The more reviews I read the more I wory. One company purchased 20 Treo 600’s and they all failed.
New Treo 650 must be more stable. HP6365 looks great and near ideal but there are horror stories there as well in regard to reliablility.
Seems you can take a chance as some people such as Nam mention. I’m probably going to buy yet another cheaper pda. They all break or get lost within 12 months so it’s another good reason to go cheaper.
Wifi and skype with the pay to phone feature could be a good compromise? I’ll check into those.
This gadget seems to do it all. Seems to be Nam’s one with a keyboard added. My boss is coming to Taiwan Monday and if I stop calling him an asshole on another thread there is a chance he might put it on the company credit card.

If you want a cheap PDA, so far my ACer N30 is working fine. Only minor quibble I have is when I sync it without the power supply attached, it doesn’t seem to be 100% grounded, so I get a tiny electric buzz touching the sides of the machine. But that probably disappears if you charge while syncing. Or, I imagine a cradle (need to buy separately) would solve this as well. But for 6400 NT, this is a total stop gap machine and I’m not complaining.
Also keep in mind it’s hard to get a machine here with English OS without paying through the nose for one. The Acer was one of the few where they can change the OS for you.
There’s a second floor PDA shop on Bade.
I think it was at Bade Rd. sec.1, Number 51. I think there was a room number as well. Something like41-43. There phone number is 23915339. I’m not sure, but I think the guys name was Vic and he spoke English pretty well.
That’s about right Ironman. There are three companies that produce basically the same product.
They are O2Xda ii mini, iMate(JAM) and Dopod. I’m running the iMate software on mine and the hardware has Dopod all over it.
Also, if you’re in the UK area, you may be able to pick up a “mini” for something like $NT11,000+, though I don’t know about the warranty factor.
For the record, it’s still a windows OS, so you do have to soft reset at times. I’ve tried other PDAs like some of the HPs and found they all do about the same thing.
Though you may want to look further into the Dopod models with more onboard memory. I find that it’s a bit of a pain that I don’t have enough to install more gadgets. Unfortunately not all programs will install to the SD cards(Although some, like the PaPaGO9 does install to the SD with not problems).
But why would anyone buy one of these now, when Windows Mobile 2005 and 3G Smartphone/PPC systems are a few months away? This isn’t just one of those “well, technology is always changing” situations. WM 2005 and 3G have been years in the making. They’re new standards that will be around at least 2-3 years.
So, I say bide your time.
Of course, it’s your money.
Jefferson, of course you’res right. I’ll certainly be waiting for the more up to date OS. I think though, that these recommended Pocket PC discussions are great. I was all set on buying a ipaq and now I’ve changed my thinking. I think the dopods look great and with the better os, will provide better again value for money. I personally only want something for checking my mail and surfing and a Pocket PC is a better alternative to carrying my laptop around on short trips.
That is what I am doing. My Ipaq 5550 will do fine for a while yet.
I agree, Amos. I look at a PPC as a laptop sub, but mostly in terms of contacts, notes, data, simple files, etc. Hopefully I can find a nice Bluetooth keyboard to use with the Acer so I can do a bit more with it. One major problem with my previous PPC was it only had an IR port, and those are a nightmare for, well, just about everything. Oh, the Acer also comes with a USB cable which you can connect to a mini HD for easy data swapping/storage. And it has Bluetooth. Not bad for such a cheap machine.
I’ve also heard Dopod CPUs and connections are too slow to use Skype (one reason I didn’t buy one). Maybe Nam can say something about that.
I was hoping to jump onto the Smartphone wagon this year but wasn’t impressed with the choice of offerings or their prices. If I’m going to put 15,000 NT into a machine, it’s got to be the right machine. But I will say this: my mountain of gadgets is growing, and by the time the one machine is out there (and I’m talking about something with at least a 100 GB microdrive), there will be quite a little graveyard of various devices in its wake.
just got a Treo 650 yesterday and still exploring it… i just wonder how much do you have to pay for wap connection… do you have any idea… coz im afraid to ask it from my service provider coz they dont speak english and i might be shocked with what they’ll gonna tell me… heheheeh… and anyone here who has a treo 650 who could use wi-fi??
Why do you want WAP? Surely it’s GPRS you want? The Treo 600/650 has a decent REAL web browser and email program.
You haven’t said who your cellphone provider is but I think they all have an English webpage at least. The relevant page for Taiwan Dageda is here; tcc.net.tw/eng/products/products_1_1.htm
And they should all have English-speaking customer representatives who can help you.
(I don’t use the browser or email on my 600 because I’m too stingy to pay for anything other than bog-standard mobile phone service. I love having the Palm calendar, address book, to dos and the Pleco Dictionary in my phone, though, and use them a lot more than I did when I had a separate PDA).
I bought the Treo 650 yesterday, and like it already. But like Joe I’m not going to get online. It’s expensive and unnecessary, and I’ve been reading too much recently about ‘hurry sickness’. These machines are supposed to make life easier, not prevent you from ever having a moment of rest.
Artagnan, data services are usually available if you have a contract plan - ie you sign up foro two years. They do have customer service people who speak English sometimes. Try by phone or go into the store on the ground floor of their HQ:
#172, Jilong Rd, sec 2, Taipei106 - just north of LiuZhangli MRT station.
loretta
how much? i dont care for the net but i do want email on the go… how is the treo for that? expensive?
