Back home, I wouldn’t say I show a lot of cleavage. But here, I was warned that some (probably most) of my shirts won’t fly when I’m teaching. They’re really only slightly V-neck, but in combination with the fact that I actually have boobs, I guess there is a bit of cleavage. At the same time, it seems like it’s totally acceptable for Taiwanese girls to wear wicked short skirts or shorts. I guess I’m just wondering if someone can explain the logic of it all to me. I’m sort of wondering if I actually have to go buy a whole new wardrobe (not the worst thing in the world, given how cheap clothes can be here - except that I kind of hate shopping) so that I don’t show any, or if I just need to be careful.
Could you demonstrate exactly what you mean with pictures as that would make it easier to give a meaningful reply to your interesting points.
Haha yeah pictures would let the morality council offer a learned and scientific synopsis of the equation.
But most likely my hypothesis is that while Taiwanese girls are allowed to wear super short skirts and minipants but not allowed to show much boobs is the simple fact that they tend to have great legs (actually have something to show here) but not much in the boob department. Therefore you are likely to create a mini-sensation with your “irregular” ( i use this term loosely here) sized ones! In other words you will make the local females jealous and the local males pay too much attention. 
Don’t worry about it. Show some cleavage. Give 'em a thrill.

Logically, I’d guess that because cleavage is such a rarity here, it’s even more wonderfully eye-catching and titillating, whereas
little-bitty-buns
and bare legs are so common that they pretty much get overlooked by the fashion police.
How much is ‘a bit of cleavage’? Not back home, but here? You may be quite modestly dressed by home standards, but revealing more than your students (how old are they?) or bosses (how fuddy-duddy are they?) ever hoped to see.
Really, I dunno. Do you trust/respect the opinions of the people telling you this? If you’re comfortable, not in danger of getting canned, causing students to blush themselves into an early grave, or starting riots, wear what you like.
“Logic” You’re look for logic in this question? The answers, mostly very good, show that logic plays no part.
I guess that when working with children, we should take a conservative approach. The rest of the time you should be wearing what you feel comfortable with. (Now I know that some people, uhm whose name start with an F, T and MT, would feel comfortable wearing nothing, *wink)
Personally, I love a bit of skin. If you are comfortable with guys grabbing their bleeding noses at the sight of you, then go for it.
To be fair, I think it’s pretty rare to see “wicked short skirts and shorts” being worn without hose, especially by somebody who is a teacher. (teenage girls don’t count, teenage girls all over the world wear short skirts and shorts)
I think first you need to separate the clothes that the Taiwanese females wear while in a teaching environment and while in their personal life. Your clothes are probably fine for your personal time but they might be borderline acceptable for teaching.
You should always wear a three-piece suit when teaching. And spats, and a top hat which you may place on your desk. Your umbrella should be left at the door.

I’m not too sure, but I don’t think too many local teachers go about with their butts hanging out. Maybe I’m wrong on that one, of course. Therefore, no, you should not go about with your tits showing even a little bit when teaching. When you’re walking about the streets, sure, but not in the classroom. I can’t believe you even asked the question!

I kind of wondered about this too.
I noticed my first summer that Taiwanese women generally don’t show much (or any) skin up top - not just in terms of cleavage, but bare shoulders, etc also seem pretty rare.
In the US, summer includes skinny-strap tank tops (although not for work, obviously), and I brought some with me, but I feel a little weird wearing them here because nobody else does. It doesn’t seem like a modesty thing, because they certainly have no problem with ridiculously short shorts. I figure that maybe it’s a sun-phobia thing - they’re not so worried about their legs being exposed to the sun, but heaven forbid their shoulders/upper chest get any color 
Well I dunno. In the ten years I’ve been teaching at my school, we’ve had plenty of women come in on 1-2 year contracts that have ALWAYS shown a lot of boob. And these were girls with a lot of boob to show. I’ve seen cleavage after cleavage after cleavage first thing in the morning for years. Not being a tit man myself (how can you find something that’s meant to go in a baby’s mouth sexually attractive?
), I never paid much heed. Nobody was ever reprimanded. BUT: one young lady was reprimanded for having naked shoulders once. Go figure.

ALL the Taiwanese teachers I work with always wear jeans at work. I’ve never seen any of them showing ass or cleavage (and quite a few do have cleavage, despite protestations here to the contrary - perhaps we have something different in the water down south). The usual dress seems to be jeans and a T-shirt, hence no ass or cleavage. The foreign female teachers do show some cleavage, though, and more than a bit of leg. Not uncommon to see them wearing shirts and dresses. The Taiwanese birds hardly ever wear dresses or skirts (unless required by their work, like banks etc…). I’ve asked a few why, and apparently it’s because of perverts making suggestive comments on the road, and logistic hassles riding a scooter.
Prolly different up north, as I’ve noticed that the super short shorts thing has made it’s way south in recent years.
I found that breast cleavage was frowned upon, but butt cleavage was fine?
I have seen older Taiwanese women chastise younger women for being too loose with their tops (as in having one button undone at the collar) but miniskirts and clear heels were a-ok. Also, despite not showing cleavage, tops could be as tight as desired.
