It is super odd they, Canada, thought this was fair and equal. Separation of 40+ years means no citizenship? I guess it’s easier given we have no meaningful constitution nor outright rights, makes it convenient for the extremists to change our freedoms based on elections.
To play the other hand of the stick, Canada uses residency to take away rights and services from Canadians, which seems more fair. That is to say, I am a citizen, not a resident. So I don’t have health care in Canada if I go back. I need to be back (I think 3 months?) And regain my residency status to be granted those long wait times!
That seems a logical way to go, it doesn’t discriminate. It could be changed and imp4oved. But taking away the right to citizenship, or voting, is why I fucking despise the conservative party. It is simply wrong to do.
How awesome would it be for some first nations abroad to test their resolve. The idea of the Canadian government throwing out first nations as not being canadian anymore, maybe that’s what it takes for this retarded law to get dumped?
Fat chance of that happening. Canada is the land of exceptions for certain categories. Rest assured, they would create a special exemption if there were a test case.
The best chance of proving your point is to get the opposition to either admit they are wrong or be unable to explain their point. Otherwise, they admit they are wrong and we can move forward without ego, nor bias, and build further the latter being preferable in my opinion.
Pose these questions. Make first nations abroad be forced to be “lost”, aka abandoned, canadians. Watch the law change quick. It is absolutely Disgusting to abandon canadians like this
I don’t disagree, but I don’t think they will ever reverse that scope change. They could however add an exemption for First Nations, since the optics of taking it away for future generations would be very bad, as you suggest. That being said, I really wonder about the numbers of First Nations expats outside of Canada.
Would such a test ever happen? I doubt it. Most expats tend to be, Engrishy teachers aside, slightly more right wing than your typical conformist Canadian, no? First Nations get a lot of sweeteners to stay in Canada. The ones that make it outside of all of this? Likely very self reliant and not necessarily tied to citizenship and patriotism.
I was thinking this scenario as a way for non first nations ethnicity Canadians to get their rights restored. Use the obvious “can’t touch” group, then extrapolate discrimination. Frankly, it seems pretty damn retarded to ened to even thunk up such ways to a solve a problem that really shouldn’t exist in the first place. But as it is, Canada is fucked up. I think we agree on that much.
Ps. By fucked up, I am more peeved by the hypocrisy side. It’s annoying as anything. I grew up with equality and human rights being imprinted. I don’t see that anymore. It’s going the wrong direction.
What an absolute sham of a health care system. Aging parent needed to go to emergency last night (am back for two weeks for Xmas) due to a suspected blood clot.
Triaged with a 6-hour wait in emergency. We left after 15 mins. She did the same thing a few years ago when she had severe Covid.
They’ve always supported the public system, but man, I sure don’t like its structure! Understaffed, long waits, surly folk, etc.
Some observations after being out of the country for a few years but visiting for 15 days:
Been to the hospital for hours and walk-ins for ailing family members that have paid a lot of taxes over the years: very, very, very overcrowded. Long lineups, and numerous patients in the hallways without rooms. Much prefer European systems or health tourism in certain countries. Canadian system at the moment is nothing to be proud of. Not in the least.
People are a lot more surly and impatient than they used to be, especially in the low paid service sectors. Polite eh? No, not really.
Food prices: outrageous and a lot worse than in the EU. A simple meal for 2 people in a restaurant:100 CDN. Chunky soup: 4 CDN a can (had a craving for clam chowder which I can not get in the UK). Just wow. 10CDN for Starbucks big bottle iced coffee. 7 CDN for a fruit cup.
Canada has a lot of things to be proud of (ice wine, artisanal Kombucha, Vancouver Island, Montreal), but health care and friendly folk? No sir.
BC for the longest time shot itself in the foot by not really allowing foreign trained doctors. It, predictably, has come back to bite them in the ass. They have (at a glacial pace) sort of kind of fixing thus issue. But many are dead or suffering due to this ineptitude.
My mother had to move recently just because the last doctor left in her area (not far from where you come from, hour ish south). Dad with Parkinsons has been on a wait list to live in a care home for over a year (old and quite fucked up by this stage). So far it’s my old half crippled mom taking care of him alone. But their medical bills are partially covered, so there is that
On #3. I have noticed this as well, at least west coast. I find the irony a little annoying as people seem to be becoming a lot more like the stereotypes of Americans they used to say they hated.
Yip, very slow in finding the right opioid balance for a relative that’s in a lot of pain. Such indifference almost led to a fatal outcome. Not impressed in the least.
Check out the thuggish behaviour of Trudeau’s RCMP staff (video link in article). If I were Rebel News, I’d be suing the fuck out of the RCMP and getting the officer fired so he is forced to serve donuts at Tim Hortons to feed his family.
The country really is going to the dogs. Can’t wait till these jackasses are booted out of office.
I am surprised you think linking tweets from PP will help . . . anything. He may well turn out to be the most annoying Canadian PM in my lifetime and perhaps all time.
Seldom is a Torry promising to boot out moldy liberal leadership a good thing. And seldom is a Liberal promising to boot out a moldy Torry leadership a good thing.
Worth a reminder, we got Justin because how bad harper was. Now we very well may get another comlelte waste of space to get rid of Justin. This circle of retardation needs to stop if we hope for actual good governance. But people be emotional teenagers more often than not when it comes to politics.
Some fun stats from the horses mouth on health care, at least in BC. All my family is severely affected by extraordinary wait times and lack of completions. So much so, some have been forced to sell their home and move to another area just to be able to have a doctor. It is beyond bonkers s. It was bad 30 years ago, and it has gotten way worse since
Procurement is a whore and military procurement is a pox-infested whore.
Will be interesting to see if this story gets wider coverage but its sole source contract to donors and Davie Shipyards out in the East just reeks of corruption. Of course, BC’s Seaspan shipyards will get shafted as Ottawa/Trudeau awards its regional allies and corporate entities. Like I said previously, the country is going to the dogs.
I’ve worked in governments in three jurisdictions during my 20-year career.
I’ve seen 70-year old bureaucrats not wanting to retire. They enjoy persuading and influencing past their prime. They don’t want to leave the game. Likewise, most politicians don’t leave voluntarily.
Unlike his father, Justin won’t have his “walk in the snow” moment. He’ll hang on until the very end. His ego is that big.
