China is picking quarrels and provoking trouble

So to turn this around: note how disciplined Lai has been so far, with few (if any) gaffes or wild statements.

I have no idea if he would be a good president, or not. But so far he’s run a disciplined campaign.

By design, his campaign is ‘more of the same’ as the Tsai gov.

He also hasnt done much. I mean he isnt popular, he has already lost millions of voters from last election. I think 2 million

Sorry the 2024 election has been held already? :slightly_smiling_face:

Of course not. Well yes maybe we can just completely ignore the polls

Maybe the numbers you are playing with are not “millions of voters [lost] from last election.” He’s not Tsai, he wasn’t at the top of the ticket, and it’s not yet 2024. He’s already swimming upstream as there is no precedent for Taiwan voters to extend a party’s rule at the presidential level past two terms. Put succinctly your framing is, at best, curious.

I wish I had a hero to believe in and look up to, it would make life a lot easier

Im going to say, if mental gymnastics was an event at the Asian Games, then the Taiwan government should fast-track you for full citizesnship, as you would be a shoe-in.

I’m simply watching this guy. Was not a fan of his work as premier and he just seemed to battle city council during his stint as Tainan mayor. I’m no fanboy, just watching how this unfolds. If this gets me an extra passport, great. :slightly_smiling_face:

The arrangement gives the National Coast Watch Center of the Philippines access to data from Canada’s “Dark Vessel Detection System,” which harnesses satellite technology to track illegal fishermen even if they switch off their location transmitting devices, the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila said.

Illegal and unregulated fishing is a problem across the Philippine archipelago, including in disputed areas of the South China Sea. The Philippine coast guard has accused Chinese coast guard ships and fishing vessels of switching off their location-transmitting devices to avoid detection and surveillance.

You want the truth, but can you handle the truth? What will the PI do when they see the scope of the illegal fishing? Stamp feet?

Establish a committee to determine how many are Chinese and how many are Filipino

Good point. You want rules? OK, here ya go.

Close call as Chinese jet comes within meters of a Canadian plane on a US mission to enforce sanctions against North Korea. For reasons I don’t understand Neetu Garcha, a Global News reporter, was on board at the time, and reported what happened.

ADDENDUM: Youtube comments in the link above absolutely flooded with 50 cent posters, muddying the waters (or the airspace as it turns out). Bleah! I feel like I need a brain shower after reading that sh&t.

Good job Chin Coast Guard again yesterday, ramming a PI supply ship and also bumping into a PI Coast Guard vessel on a resupply mission to the Second Thomas shoal, where PI has an old ship grounded and used as a base (for many, many years).

FYI, that thing hanging off the front of the CCG vessel is new, and looks to be intentionally designed for the height of the boats they are hitting. it is a battering ram, designed to rip stanchions off the PI vessels, and holes in their hulls. Above the water line, but still…

all the newer 4200 and 5200 series vessels seem to have it, while older vessels do not.

Remember those gusty PI coast guards who shot at a TW fishing vessel and killed its captain. Why aren’t those trigger happy PI coast guards ever around when they ran into Chin coast guards, I wonder.

@hansioux It’s a size thing, I guess. Plus cannons.

Anyone see a pattern here? Canada supports PI in detecting Chinese illegal fishing (running dark with no AIS) and the next day, Chinese jet harasses Canadian surveillance aircraft near North Korea. Coincidence, or retaliation?

Maybe let Gina stretch their navy out a bit first.

See what happens when the muscle is just out of range.

Regardless what you think of Harris, he walked through all the disputed regions on China’s new map.

Most of China’s encroachment along the Indian, Nepali, Bhutan, and the South China Sea is expansionist but to be expected. What’s interesting is China reasserts its claim over the entirety of Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island, despite having reached an agreement with Russia back in 2004 to each occupy half of the island.
