Classifying hook turn rules

Embarrassed to say I passed my scooter test last September but am not sure about these two hook turn rules:

  1. If there’s a dedicated right turn lane and a straight lane, are you meant to enter the box from the right turn only lane or the straight lane
  2. Are you required to put your blinkers on? I think I remember from the written test that you’re not supposed to but I think most people do for safety reasons.

The ones who should be embarrassed are the ones who designed the license process

Also, just rely on your skilllz

@forformosa

From the straight lane, no blinkers is the rule.

As you are technically going straight, not turning into the other street.

But be aware many don’t know this rule, and many go straight from right turning lane and will plow straight into you if you’re not careful.

  1. You move into the hook turn box from the outermost lane that allows you to go straight.

As @RandomName said be extremely careful if there is a dedicated right lane to the right. A lot of people will ride straight through the right turn only lane and crash into people legally moving into the hook turn box from the outermost through lane.

  1. No turn signal required. The maneuver is considering going straight twice. Generally speaking it’s probably better to not use it as people may confuse your signal as wanting to actually turn right.

Last I remember the part about entering the hook turn box from the outermost lane wasn’t even mentioned during the 2hr. “safety” lecture. I’m not sure if it’s even a question on the test.

If anything it’s more unusual to learn anything from the current motorcycle licensing process than not.

If it becomes too dangerous with too many scooters going straight from right turning lane, just abort and go to the next intersection!

Don’t try to force the rule… it isn’t worth your health/life.

Best advice, don’t try to force your way through or stop in the middle to wait for the people to pass, even if you see others doing it.

Really keep an eye on the other scooters in front and to the side of you, they may cut across without indicators to get in the box (as technically they don’t need to indicate).

If there is no second turn box or sign keep an eye out for the shadow hugger on the right hand side who is really turning left, they will sometimes shoot straight across everyone just as soon as the lights change.

Remember indicators here are a matter of national security and should only be used in the last second before turning, keep the enemy guessing (sarcasm).

During my driving test I was told that you always need to use your turn signals when making a hook turn. I asked the proctor, should I use my left signal, since I want to turn left, or my right signal, since I am actually driving to the right to the box?

He said, it doesn’t matter, you just need a signal :joy:

He was wrong. Hence the confusion out there in the wild.

What might confuse the matter is on the test straight after the hook turn box is a lane change and left turn. And indicator needs to be used for those.

Even the police don’t know

I think it makes more sense to use an indicator.

As people can turn from the middle, they are not always going to be to the right most side of the lane. Its not perfect, but not using an indicator doesnt make sense either.

You could get fined for using the indicator. Or be in the wrong if there is an accident, if you use the idicator that is an indication you are turning right before the turning box. Someone might see your indicator and think they too can turn right while postioned to your left.

If you aren’t positioned to get to the turning box either you haven’t prepared or circumstances have changed, and you should probably go to the next intersection if it is too busy.

You could get fined- true but Unlikely.

You could cause an accident- true but you are more likely to cause an accident by not indicating.. do you see my point?

Don’t see your point. Using indicator is more likely to cause accident, as you didn’t turn right.

But you are still turning.. into the scooter box.

And Taiwanese dont always turn from the right most part of the lane. Some do it from the middle, it would be safer to alert those people behind them who they are going to be crossing by using the indicator.

You aren’t turning. Random nonsensical signals already make driving/riding dangerous… don’t contribute to it.

Answer is in the name mate. Hook. Turn.

Hook turn sure… but at no point in that process are you turning.

Yes you are. You are physically turning your bike into the right hand street and then turning it to the left to enter the scooter box, to line yourself up to make the hook turn in question.

Most countries take a descriptive approach to languages and a prescriptive approach to traffic rules. Taiwan is doing things in reverse.

There’s really no argument to be had here, go check the rules.
