I used to regularly ride a large road with three lanes in each direction that had a set of lights where every light turned red just when you got to it if you did the speed limit for like four lights in a row and I knew that, but I couldn’t speed because there was a cop at the first light on the scooter. When the third light turned red, he just turned on his lights and went through it. Even the police run red lights.
But I’ve also seen police sitting at a T intersection, having to turn one way or the other with no indicator, and I’ve seen police use the indicator when the road has a curve, even though they’re not actually turning they’re just following the road.
I think it makes sense to indicate when turning into a box, especially when you’re in a 50 km/h stream of traffic.
You’re literally about to slow down and veer off in front of traffic, so of course you should give people warning unless you want said traffic to ram into you.
Like you learn in your first driving class, “mirror, signal, manoeuvre.”
You’re completely right. Changing lanes, turning, and moving into a box are three situations where you’re suddenly slowing down and changing your road position.
It is within the intersection… you don’t indicate with turn signals to move around in the same lane.
A functioning brake light indicates that you are slowing down.
People will think you are turning right if you use turn signals and possibly collide with you. Even if you indicate you can’t move there in front of traffic, you need to be careful either way… so it makes zero difference in that regard. No one in Taiwan will giveway because you put your turn signals on.
Of course you can indicate within lanes. When there are only scooters within a lane, they form ‘mini-lanes’ with faster riders in one mini-lane. Moving from one mini-lane to another without signalling is just as dangerous as moving into a marked lane.
I’m curious if you indicate when you’re about to pull into a parking space. That’s also not turning into an intersection. Or do you just activate the brakes and mentally wish everyone behind you the best of luck?
Well the exam looks like you need to use the turn signal even within the same lane if slowing down or coming to a stop (which you need to do to use the scooter box).
Question 211 - 0 (that means true) - A driver is required to either use their turn signal light or an arm signal to alert any vehicle behind them in the same lane that they intend to slow down or stop temporarily.
Please stay off the roads. Your fear of using the indicator might lead some innocent victim to crash into you when you start manoeuvring without signalling.
Just kidding. Demonstrating how easily these arguments degenerate into straw man arguments.
Seriously, I was asking because I notice about three quarters of scooter riders do signal for the hook turn box, while others don’t. I wanted to clarify the official rule.
