It’s bad in terms of cases, yes.
In South Dakota they are averaging around 7 deaths a day, and deaths lag infections by around 2-3 weeks so based on the below it will likely go up.

To about what, 1000 a day or something scary?
Most Americans don’t itemize their tax returns.
It’s a small state. At an annualised rate covid is now the leading cause of death and the numbers are rising.

That will be the case in many places. You can’t magic away death.
No one is asking for magic, just some changes in behaviour and clear science based messaging could prevent deaths.
An issue with looking at fatalities only for judging the severity is that by the time they are deemed too high, there is the lag from infections before any actions can have effect, there will always be an overshoot.
Looking per-capita, Taiwan’s roads are much safer than the Covid situation in South Dakota, do we just shrug our shoulders and say we don’t have a magic wand?

Of course we don’t. Why would anyone suggest such a thing?

You have been downplaying the severity, and in the previous post you said “You can’t magic away death” which interpreted as a shrug of the shoulders.

I am attempting to achieve a sense of balance with regards to the number of deaths.
Possibly
It happened in Italy too.

Doubling rate every nne days.
Which is the difference between hundred thousand cases a day now in the UK and a million cases a day in the UK in November if no restrictions in place . Imagine the chaos of a million cases a day.

OK, fair enough, there was a post upstream that I interpreted as downplaying and baiting rather than balancing:
North Dakota was 15 deaths on Tuesday. South Dakota was zero deaths. I assume the ICU’s are going to get overwhelmed chaps will be chipping in shortly.

I was right, though.
A new daily high of infections. An increase of over 40% from 2 weeks ago.

Not good . . .
Guy
So if 60% get vaccinated, and the vaccine is 50% effective. Only 30% of the population have immunity. Is that enough to stop outbreaks? Some studies indicate herd immunity requires much higher vaccination coverage.
If there was widespread access to the medicines the glorious Trumper took then perhaps we wouldn’t need to worry about vaccines. He’s in several categories defined as high risk and yet he was back in action 3 days later and not longer after back on a punishing campaign trail that would have half of us keeling over in our best week!

Maybe COVID-19 isn’t as dangerous as the media hype.

That’s impossible, he had a half a hospital to himself, the world’s best doctors and treatments and had early diagnosis.
And maybe he was lucky, we just don’t know.
The problem with covid is how fast it spreads, a doubling time of 9 days even with some social restrictions in the UK for example. So it’s not so much it kills as it wipes out all the medical resources and then you just can’t get treatment for it or much else.
