The Taiwanese man in his 70s, who has no recent travel history, was likely infected by his brother or his sister-in-law, who both returned from a trip to Canada on April 9, the CECC said.
The man dropped off food for the couple while they were in home quarantine, and on one such occasion, he stayed for about 30 minutes, as his brother had suffered a fall and he had tried to help him, the CECC said.
The man’s brother tested positive for COVID-19 on April 14, while the man’s sister-in-law tested positive on Tuesday, after which the man was tested, and he was confirmed Wednesday to have contracted the disease, the CECC said.
Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the CECC, said at a press briefing Wednesday that the man should have reported his half-an-hour stay at his brother’s apartment, as people in home quarantine are not allowed to have visitors.
And there’s more:
Prior to testing positive, the 70-year-old man had visited several public places in Taoyuan, according to the CECC.
On April 20, he attended a dance class from 1:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Beixing community center on Jinling Road, and he ate at a noodle restaurant called Too Lazy to Cook on the same street, at around 4 p.m., the CECC said.
He later went to Amanda Dance Hall on Xinsheng Road, where he danced from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the CECC said. On April 21, he attended a class for seniors at Jong Bu Elementary, on Yong’an Road, in a room that is reserved specifically for that purpose, the CECC said.
According to Chen, the CECC has identified 190 people who had contact with the man, and they have been asked to quarantine at home for 14 days.
Others who had been to these locations should follow self-health management protocols, and they are advised to get tested immediately if they develop COVID-19 symptoms, Chen said.
